Gaming news with Coffee week 28

Welcome, welcome, come on in. Your usual cup of coffee? Or would you rather have it iced tea, depending on how hot it is in your part of the world. Over here we can’t complain, we had some nice weather but it’s not a real Summer yet. Which is a pity, as a lot of kids already have their holiday.

Let’s jump into gaming news, as there’s plenty of it!

Pokémon Go is making an impression

I hadn’t expected to have such fun with the Pokémon Go app. As I mentioned last week when I wrote down my first thoughts on the new mobile game, I downloaded it through the American App Store. But as soon as it’s released in my own country, I’m going to download that version, as I’ve been itching to buy an extra incubator for my eggs. And you can’t do that in a foreign app store. And like always, it’s most fun to play it when you’re not alone. My daughter and her friend are playing too, so we have some tall tales to swap about our captures.

Do you know how I’ll always remember the game in years to come? Yesterday she mentioned she needed to walk only 500 meters more to get her egg to hatch. So I proposed to go out for a walk together, hunting the beasties. Now normally she abhors walking, but she agreed enthusiastically. Because of the game we had some great mother and daughter quality time, chatting amicably and catching some fresh air and an Eevee in the process! As far as I’m concerned, this game is a hit!

It’s slowly trickling into Europe, as Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the UK have it now. I expect the other countries to follow soon.Pokemon Go, Egg hatching

Monster Hunter Stories special edition

I haven’t played on my Japanese 3DS for some time, but there’s a game coming up on October 8th in Japan that might just have me whip it out again: Monster Hunter Stories. It will be an RPG adventure with turn-based battles, the kind that I really like. The world of “monster riders” is explored in the game, and they are different from monster hunters: they have deep connections with monsters. So no hacking and slashing with blood spurting all around in this game. I wrote a little bit more about the spin-off from the main series in this article. And would you just look at this cool special edition!

Style Savvy Fashion Forward gets a demo

Style Savvy Fashion Forward, the American equivalent of Style Boutique Fashion Forward, will soon be released, on August 19 to be exact. But you can give it a try sooner, as the demo will be available in the eShop on August 4. Want to know more about this fun game? Here are my thoughts about it!

Yo-Kai Watch 2 has some nice incentives to buy

Nintendo has announced that there will be some nice goodies to entice you to buy the game: when you buy the physical copy it will come with an exclusive Yo-Kai medal with the QR code on the back. It will give Jibanyan a new Soultimate Move in your game. When you decide to get the digital copy you will get either Robonyan F or Sailornyan depending on whether you buy Bony Spirits or Fleshy Souls. Will you be buying the game?

Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan for 3DS might be something to keep an eye on

Bandai Namco has announced that the manga series Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan is getting a Nintendo 3DS game. Now to be honest I’m not familiar with the manga, but the mention of a feature that has a variety of ESP powers for its main features got my attention. Well, it will have to be released in Japan first, and then come West too. But, we will see!

  1. I’ve sadly never got into Monster Hunter. Maybe it’s because it’s a bit too slow paced for me, combat-wise. So, much like Rhythm Haven, I get crazy annoyed whenever they show it during a Nintendo Direct. It’s like this: “Hey guys, look! It’s the game we all love, RHYTHM HAVEN!” “I don’t care”. Not saying Rhythm Haven is a bad video game series, nor am I saying the same about Monster Hunter. They just don’t pique my interest, that’s all.

You know, I will officially refer to Sailornyan as… SAILOR MOON NYAN! All the anime references! Bwahahaha!

So, onto my week of gaming! I started playing Mega Man Battle Network, a spinoff of the Mega Man video game series. I’m already near the end of the main game! It’s a fun but fairly flawed game with a unique battle system and an episodic main story, only getting real by the end. Where have I heard that before…?

I’m thinking about getting Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. From what I’ve heard, it’s a severely underrated game with an awesome battle system. It really looks like something you’d adore!

And finally, I replayed a bit of Kid Icarus: Uprising! It’s still one of my favorite 3DS games out there, with an well-written story and enjoyable characters. The only problem is the controls… You do get used to them, but it took a while for me! And it’s a major problem for lefties.

    1. Well, I never could get into Monster Hunter either, though I really wanted to. But it’s just too realistic and bloody for me. And I’m awful at real life fighting..too slow. But the Monster Hunter Stories look very very different in graphics, more cutesy. And it’s an RPG where dragon riders work together with dragons. Looks good!
Oh yes, I have no doubt I’d love the FE Tokyo Mirage, I’ve been following it. But I’m not very good at Console gaming, and the price tag is making me thing twice. €60 is a lot of money…and there’s not even a demo in the eshop. Pity as I really think it’s the game for me.
