The first fishing tourney is on this April 11th! Either the Spring or Fall one depending on your hemisphere. The fishing tourneys are now seasonal, meaning you’ve only got one shot at them every three months. It seems to run the same so here’s the basics on how to participate and the rewards you get!
Getting Started
The event will start at around 9am and run until 6pm on the particular day. C.J. will be in the plaza in front of resident services so talk to him to get started. This time the tourney consists of 3-minute runs to catch as many fish as you can. If you catch at least three you’ll gain bonus points. Once the time is up return to C.J. to gain points, talk to him again to sell the fish in the cooler (or take them out first if you found a new fish). The unique items are given after every ten points but you’ll need to talk to him a third time, about something else and then redeem points. After the first time you will need to spend 500 bells to enter additional times.
You can also participate in the tourney on other people’s islands, if a total of five fish are caught then a co-op bonus is applied, meaning you’ll rack points up faster if playing with others. Though they’ll all need to clean out their cooler after each run. Once you’ve attained 100 points you’ll earn a trophy which you’ll get in the mail the next day, another one at 200 and the last at 300.
Tips
- Thankfully fish bait is absolutely allowed. So if you’ve got some prep time dig up manila clams and turn them into fish bait.
- Talk to C.J. on the side to the closest body of water, you have five seconds from the conversation until the timer starts.
- Have at least two fishing poles on you at all times in case yours breaks.
- Minimize running as you’ll scare off fish.
- C.J. pays more for fish so don’t be scared to sell them

I missed the Fishing Tourney because of real life stuff that day, and I feel so bad for missing out.

Does it mean you only had this one chance, or will I have another chance somewhere the coming 3 months?
Do you happen to know if time traveling for only a couple of hours (backwards) has a bad influence on your Island/ Character?
I can mostly only play by day, and I have yet to see 1 falling star.
And of course because of that I’m missing the key ingredient for a lot of special recipes.
I thinking about changing the time for a week to gather some star fragments.
But I would hate it if it would make me a cheater.
There is one fishing tourney a season so the next one is in July.
So far the only negative for time traveling people have seen is that turnips will rot instantly.
