Blocky Farm was initially released as a mobile game by developers Jet Toast. It has now been redeveloped for the Nintendo Switch by Forever Entertainment S.A. It’s a casual simulation game to spend some time with. So let’s jump in the tractor and find out more about it.
As its name suggests, Blocky Farm lets you manage a farm. In short, your task is to plant crops and turn a plot of land into a prosperous business. You will also care for various farm animals, such as pigs, cows and chickens and keep them happy.
Blocky Farm is vegan and vegetarian-oriented. There isn’t any slaughtering of the pigs and cows for meat, so no animals are being harmed in the making of this farm. They can all live worry-free with your tender care.
You’ll spend most of your time planting crops such as corn, wheat, peas, and sugar cane, waiting for them to grow, and then selling your products to the local village via the farm’s delivery truck.
You will also interact with the villagers who stop by your farm, and you’ll perform specific quests for them. Completing the quests earns you more coins to increase the size of your farm and its output.
As you grow your farm, you’ll produce more products such as bread, cakes and cookies and open up new areas to increase the size of your farm. There are plenty of achievements to unlock along the way and a daily bonus for playing the game each day.
Eventually, at level 15, you unlock the tractor to help you around the farm. The tractor has a physics-based drive system which works well for driving. Overall, you can control the game either by the joycon or the touchscreen. Both methods work adequately, though the touchscreen control sometimes took a few seconds to register I had touched the screen.
Play Dress Up
One aspect of the gameplay I enjoy the most is the ability to dress your animals. You’ll unlock sunglasses and hats, allowing you to customise the animals. Seeing a cow wearing sunglasses and a top hat appealed to my sense of humour; it is a fun addtion to the game. You can also have a pet cat or dog to play ball or throw a stick for and pet them.
Blocky Farm is a fun game; its roots are in mobile gaming, and it has been redeveloped with the Switch in mind. There aren’t any in-app purchases, though you do have to wait for things to happen. For that reason alone, Blocky Farm is more of a casual game, one to pick up for a quick ten or 15-minute playtime. It is similar to many other farming simulation games. For instance, it’s clear they took a good look at HayDay. But where HayDay is only available on mobile, you can now play Blocky Farm on our favorite handheld device and a set price, no micro transactions.
The game has cute and colourful voxels graphics with a weather system. I’ve had bright sunny days on the farm and equally as many rainy days. The accompanying soundtrack and sound effects to your farming are quite upbeat though the music does get repetitive quickly.
If you love farming games, you should give this one a shot. Blocky Farm is an excellent game for players who want to kill time at an appointment or get a quick gaming fix before bed. It’s great to pick up and play for a short gaming session with a cup of coffee!
Final Verdict: I Like it a Lot
