Celebrating Earth Day

Every year, on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated. This year, in 2023, it’s the 53rd anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. This year’s theme is Invest in our Planet. Of course, we can do this in our everyday life by having plants in our garden or on our balcony that support butterflies, bees and other pollinators, by reducing the use of plastic and separating that which we do use and by making sustainable fashion choices, so you don’t have to throw away clothes after only using them for a year.

The games mentioned in this article are games that support a theme or bring a message about reducing our carbon footprint. Each of them was tried and tested by us here at LadiesGamers!

Trash Invasion

Trash Invasion is all about trash and how it has come to life. The world is being overrun by its own refuse, and players need to not only pick up trash and recycling and put it in the right bins but also fight trash monsters, destroy non-recyclables, and earn points.

Mina liked the game, and you can read her review here.

APICO

In this laid-back bee-keeping sim, you learn about breeding, collecting and conserving bees! Through a mix of real-world biology and fantasy, you will discover new bee species in the wild and cross-breed them to discover more and rehabilitate the fleeting population of the APICO islands. Gather resources and craft hives, useful tools, and bee products, and uncover the forgotten secrets of the island.

Extra nice: a portion of the games’ profits goes towards bee conservation! You can find the details of that here. Also, Paula was head-beekeeper for a while; read her review here.

Fresh Start Cleaning Simulator

Fresh Start is a relaxing single-player game available on Steam, in which you embark on a mission to clean up the world and restore nature to its fresh and colourful shape. Watch as the world changes in front of your eyes as you help animals, solve puzzles and grow plants around you.

There’s something so satisfying about washing all the muck and rubbish away and giving the animals their beautiful habitat back. No big challenges; just getting in the zone of cleaning and watching everything look lovely again. I’m not really into real-life cleaning, but I loved it!

Beasts of Maravilla

Inspired by the need for humanity to preserve our most at-risk plants, animals, and their habitats, Beasts of Maravilla Island takes you to a fantastical jungle island that is home to a host of magical creatures. Players take on the role of Marina Montez, an aspiring wildlife photographer who is armed with her grandfather’s journal of Maravilla and his camera. Marina must climb, explore, and solve puzzles in order to collect photographic evidence to share with the world to help restore belief in magic and repair the protective barrier around the island.

Paula played this photography game when it was released! Read her thoughts here.

Bee Simulator

The hive awakens as the sun’s first rays warm the horizon. It’s time to test your wings, receive orders from the Queen and begin your first mission. And that’s just the start of your adventures. Humans want to cut down the tree that holds your hive, so your fate – and that of the whole swarm – rests on your tiny shoulders!

In Bee Simulator, you see the world through the eyes of a bee! And as an experiment, we had a review up for this game made by two reviewers, who had a distinct varying opinion on the game! Check out Paige’s and Ash’s thoughts here!

Terra Nil

Terra Nil is a reverse city builder with an environmental strategy about transforming a barren wasteland into a thriving, balanced ecosystem. Bring life back to a lifeless world by purifying soil, cleaning oceans, planting trees, and reintroducing wildlife, then leave without a trace.

Just recently, the game was released on Steam and is also available through Netflix. Paula’s thoughts on it are here.

Alba: a Wildlife Adventure

Join Alba as she visits her grandparents on a Mediterranean island. She is ready for a peaceful summer of wildlife exploration with her friend Ines, but when she sees an animal in danger, she realises she needs to do something about it!

This is truly a Mediterranean paradise if you ignore all the litter! From the idyllic beaches to the ancient castle overlooking the town, the whole island is ready to be explored. With Ines and your grandfather – who is a total bird nerd – by your side, you can start the movement to save the island. Maybe even the world after that.

Paula writes in her review: What defines Alba: A Wildlife Adventure and makes it different from your average adventure game is a commitment to helping the wildlife you encounter. There’s no battling or fighting here, it’s all peaceful gameplay. Instead, you’ll work with the other townsfolk, restoring animals to their home and making the world around you a better place in general.

Never Alone: Arctic Collection

Experience the epic journey of Nuna and Fox as they search for the source of an eternal blizzard that threatens the survival of everything they have ever known. Never Alone is an atmospheric puzzle platformer developed in collaboration with the Iñupiat, an Alaska Native people, drawn from a traditional story that has been shared across the generations.

James reviewed the game for us and wrote:

Never Alone is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch library. A casual platformer that I highly recommend playing through in co-op with a loved one. You’ll laugh at the odd glitch, possibly cry at the emotional moments but also learn a lot about Alaskan native culture. If somehow you have yet to play this game, this is a great time to jump on. It’s a cold adventure but the warm fuzzy feelings will leave an impact for years to come.

Beyond Blue

Beyond Blue is a single-player narrative adventure where you get to explore the wonders of the ocean in the comfort of your own home. This game certainly piqued my interest as it partnered with the folks from the BBC who made the brilliant documentary series Blue Planet. If you like learning about the ocean and fancy a chilled-out swimming adventure, then Beyond Blue may be worth diving into.

James did, and even managed to prevent getting his Switch wet!

  1. Wingspan is about bird conservation, since the whole game is about collecting birds in your bird sanctuary. Super relaxing. European expansion is out on Switch now too!
