Handheld Gaming News week 28

Hi there! Come on in my friend, pull up a chair and get yourself a cuppa! My summer holiday is starting one week from now, so I’m trying to get things wrapped up at work. With the super busy year we have had, I’m more then ready for some R&R! We have planned another road trip, this time from San Francisco to Seattle, so an entirely different part of the US for us! Anyway, it’s time to look at the highlights on the site and to share some handheld gaming news that stood out to me this week.

It’s been another busy week here at LadiesGamers with two new writers joining: the mysterious penguin Evriun (I guess only a beak is needed to type on the laptop?) and our youngest writer Petra.  Sadly, Vic Thorley who was the first writer to join late last year has decided she has her hands more then full with the Handheld Gaming Network on Facebook, and has left the team.

I decided to support another kickstarter, even though this one is only for PC for now, but hopefully the Switch stretch goal will be reached, as one can never have enough cute farming games: Farm Folks

We have covered some amazing games too:

Pretty soon we will have another exiting news to share, so keep your eyes peeled to the site!

Octopath Traveler has been released

A lot of gamers where really looking forward to the release of Octopath Traveler on Switch this week. This is promising to be an interesting RPG adventure! NintendoLife published a trailer with a quick overview to get you started, just in case its too daunting at first.

Nintendo strives for 20-30 indie titles a week

The Nintendo Switch has been a big success for indie developers and consumers seem more than happy to play great titles that might otherwise haven’t gotten a chance on the platform. Since we closely follow all the released titles in our Thursday eShop releases articles, we can testify that there are a lot of new ones every week.

It seems this won’t be slowing down anytime soon: Nintendo stated that they strive for 20 to 30 new indie titles a week!

RPG Fall of Light comes to Switch

We recently published the review for action RPG Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Paige liked it a lot. Seeing the footage of a new upcoming RPG for Switch, I am intrigued.

Fall of Light is a story-driven action RPG set within a world consumed by darkness. You are Nyx, an old warrior who has embarked on a dangerous journey with his daughter, Aether, an ‘indigo child’ who radiates luminescence. Only together will they be strong enough to complete their quest: reach the last place on Earth still touched by sunlight.

The game that was first published on the PC, will be on Switch this Summer, thanks to indie publisher Digerati. The game is developed by RuneHeads. The version coming to the Switch is the ultimate Darkest Edition. Check out the trailer to see what it’s about.

Fully function NES simulator working in Animal Crossing

This article on NintendoLife sure got my attention, as I used to play the GameCube Animal Crossing game: remember how you could play some NES games in your virtual home? And by doing special requests from villagers you could get new NES game to play on it, or you could find them hidden on the island. Well, this secret remained hidden for 20 years:

Security researcher James Chambers has discovered that the NES emulator in the game can actually be used to play any NES ROM stored on a GameCube memory card – not just the ones present inside Animal Crossing itself. Chambers has found that loading up the in-game NES causes the game to search for any compatible NES ROM files with functions such as “famicom_get_disksystem_titles” and “memcard_game_list.”

What it comes down to is that this NES device was fully functioning and capable of so much more!

Brand new action RPG in development for the Switch

Developer Colopi announced recently that it is working on a brand new title: an action RPG for the Switch. The working title is Shironeko New Project, and it won’t be ready until 2020.

They have some experience with the White Cat Project. This was originally launched in Japan back in July 2014, and it released in the US as Colopl Rune Story for iOS and Android, but it ended up shutting down in less than a year. That game is still available in Japan on mobile.

Looking at the graphics I have high hopes!

Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists headed West this Winter

Gust has been churning out Atelier titles at an increasing rate. Now I love the series, and even though I was less then impressed with the last one (find my review of Atelier Lydie here) I am looking forward to the new one.

Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists promises to be a sort of celebratory title, because lots of known names will make a comeback. This is a description of the game.

Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World puts players in the shoes of Nelke von Lestamm, a young noblewoman who has always been fascinated by the ancient legend of the Sage of Granzweit; a tale of the Granzweit Tree which is said to bestow great power upon those whom discover it. As she grew up and learned her skills were not in alchemy, she studied hard to become a government official and help those around her. The day Nelke is set to graduate the academy, however, her life changes forever as she hears a rumour that the tree can be found within her father’s lands near the small village of Westwald. Her father grants her permission to search for it on one condition – that she becomes governor of the area and develops Westwald into a prosperous city.

As players work hard to build Westwald up from a quaint village to a flourishing city, they will require the aid of the many alchemists that settle in the town. Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World features famous alchemists from previous entries across the Atelier series, including those from the Salburg, Arland, Dusk, and Mysterious trilogies.

It is coming to the PC, PS4 and the Switch this Winter! Meanwhile, look at this sweet commemorative trailer below!

Funko Pikachu!

I guess it was only a matter of time before the first Funko doll would arrive based on Pokemon. And only Pikachu could be the first of course. In July 2018, the vinyl collectible will only be available at Target stores. A price was not announced, but the standard price for Funko Pop figures at Target tends to be $8.99.

Enough I guess for now. I want to wish you all an amazing weekend, and happy gaming!!
