Handheld gaming news wk2

Come on in, have a cup of coffee (or tea) and let’s chat some handheld gaming news! I’m a bit late in gathering the news this week, sadly I was hindered by a migraine that lasted for days. So no gaming devices, no searching for gaming news online and no writing. At least I was able to watch the Nintendo Switch presentation this afternoon, and I guess that’s the largest portion of news this week.

The week wasn’t all glum for me though, I celebrated my birthday too. Even at my advanced age I always look forward to it, and I was touched at all your kind messages. My gaming friend BriBri and I write back and forth daily in MiiTomo, and he was kind enough to tweet this. A lot more messages from you readers cam my way, and I’m very chuffed about that. Thanks everyone!

Nintendo Switch presentation

Have seen it you already? I always look forward to a Nintendo presentation, though when it’s held in America with Reggie hosting we can expect more pun and fun. The fact that it was held for a Japanese audience meant it was much more correct and straightforward. Kimishima opened the show in a way that dearly made me miss Iwata. I felt Yoshiaki Koizumi, who did most of the presenting, did a nice job though. But overall, it wasn’t the quirky entertaining affair that I’d expected.

There were a couple of things I noticed though. One made me very happy: no region locking for the games that we will play on the Switch!! Now that is excellent news. As you know I have three 3DS’s now, one for each region, and that won’t be necessary anymore when it comes to Switch games.

But what about the online services? We will get them free at first, but afterward it’s a paid service. I don’t know what to expect there. I don’t think we can we still play online with friends, if you don’t pay monthly. That’s sad, right? I know it’s a concept Sony and Microsoft have embraced before, but at Nintendo, we are used to livening up our gaming with some great online connectivity. You can see what to expect in this picture.

A look at JoyCon

By now we all know that you can detach them from the Switch screen to play tabletop style, and even share it with a friend. But we didn’t know yet was that there’s a NFC in one of them so we can read our amiibo. The other one has a capture button to capture screenplay. It even has a IR Motion camera in it, so it’s able to detect the distance, shape, and motion of nearby objects in specially designed games. The wrist straps makes them look quite comfortable to use, and they come in three colours: grey, neon red and neon blue.

The HD Rumble is a nice feature. During the presentation, they shared an example of how these detailed effects could allow players to feel the sensation of individual ice cubes colliding inside a glass when shaking a Joy-Con. The HD Rumble is said to be able to provide players with a level of realism that can’t be experienced through sights and sounds alone.

Games for the Switch

Some games have already been confirmed at launch for the Switch. These are:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • 1-2 Switch
  • Super Bomberman R
  • Skylanders Imaginators
  • Just Dance 2017

Other games are confirmed with a Spring 2017 date:

  • I am Setsuna
  • SnipperClippers
  • Fast RMX
  • Has-Been Heroes
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Arms
  • Disgaea 5 Complete
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris
  • Rime

Other then that, we are in for a long wait. Splatoon 2 was shown, but won’t make it before Summer. And while most people will get very happy about Super Mario Odyssey, it won’t reach us till the Holidays 2017. A year from now.

Of course, a lot of games are in the works, lots from third parties. I’m looking forward to Dragon Quest X, project Octopath Traveller which Square Enix presented at the event, and some other titles that have been mentioned before, like Pikmin 4 and Stardew Valley.

Thoughts about the Switch

I really would have like more launch games, there isn’t one that would interest me enough to buy the console right away. I know many of you will think Zelda is the game to buy Switch for, but at the price of $ 299,99 that’s a bit much for playing one game.  But then, I am Setsuna should be interesting, and Octopath Traveller has me interested.  I do hope we will see games like Animal Crossing, Story of Seasons or another good simulation game in the near future.

Of course, I would have liked a lower price for the console, especially considering that this time, there won’t be any games included. Not even 1,2 Switch, which to me is a game that I would pay no more for then a couple of dollars. It seems that Nintendo plans to ask $ 59,99 for Switch games, which should make it a financial challenge to build up a good games library.

The things that weren’t mentioned bother me too. Is there easy access to the internet, like on a tablet? What will be the price of the Online Services? Is there no backwards compatibility to any of the earlier consoles? I think not, as Switch will be using cartridges.

The question for me is: will I take the Switch instead of my 3DS with me on my daily commute? I don’t see that happening yet! So, I’m still on the fence. What are you thoughts about the Switch? Is it a must buy on day one for you? Or are you waiting to see what happens next?

  1. If I do get the Nintendo Switch it would be at a much later date then the release. I have mixed feelings about it. I liked some of the games, but many of them are not coming out right away. I liked Skyrim, Splatoon, and the Octopath Traveler. Zelda looks great too, but like you said it is one of two coming out right away. I will just wait and see. I hope they do have a good variety of games for the Switch.

    1. Same here. A lot of potential, I really like the mix of handheld and console. But I want to see more games I want first. I do wonder though what the paid monthly service will mean for online play with the 3DS

  2. I reply on your FB post, but here is my thought…. I am still waiting to see review from players and more games coming up after it release before I get it. Not going to follow the hyped train like wiiU. ( we are talking about our thoughts on switch, right? I have not click on the link yet, lol! )

    Paid online service…. not interested.

I believed earlier on, they already said there will be no backwards compatibility. So those games you build up during Wii/WiiU /(newest ) mini NES time, will probably have to re- buy them all over again? ( don’t take my words for it. )

For Region locking, one of the many question I wanted to know, (from their translator during the presentation )…. [We revise our approach, and decided that in “general” we will not apply region locking to nintendo switch “software”.]

Everyone only hear the word “no region locking”. I don’t want to be the party pooper, but I have to nick-pick everything being said here. I don’t want to put too high hope on their promises, cos what they said ^ could mean they will change it anytime if it don’t work out for them. .. if they are fix on “no region locking” they will said “we have good news, there will be NO REGION LOCK for Switch. Maybe cos I have been watching their presentation for a while now to notice how they usually put their words, if they are keen on something that will make their fans super hype. idk, this is just how I feel.

Games wise, “I am Setsuna” I already have it for JP and US version from PS. So not interested in that. Breath of the Wild, I am looking forward to it, but I don’t need to play it on day one release. Same as what you’ve said, the price for those games just make it hard to build up a good games library.

    1. You do have a point, Sparky. That is indeed what they said about region locking.

Hmm, so apparently it’s not as cut and dried as I thought it was. I do wish that among the games announced there would be some great sim game. Why not give us a new Animal Crossing console game, finally? I know a lot of ladies who would buy it day one on release. Instead of going to the usual go-to games again.

  3. I really want to see Animal Crossing, Story of Seasons, and similar games as these on the Switch too! I don’t see myself getting the Switch as soon as it comes out, however, I know it will be one I will eventually get since my sons are Nintendo fans. I’m also looking forward to seeing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild come out too! My youngest son (9 yr old) loves Skylanders, so that’s something good to look forward to as well!

    1. It’s funny, but the more I read about the Switch and the fans reactions to it, the surer I am that I’ll wait. We’ve been through this once before, when the 3DS was released. I still get annoyed when I think about paying 250 euro on day one for it, when there were hardly any good games at launch. I ended up playing Nintendogs, it was the only one that came close to my gaming preferences.
And then in no time, the price dropped!

      1. Well, hopefully the Switch brings out plenty of games with it when it arrives!! If it doesn’t, then I will also be waiting for the price to drop!! But hopefully it will not come to that, because I am pretty excited about the Switch arriving soon!!! 🙂

  4. First of all, Happy belated Birthday to you! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed your day. I’m sorry to hear a migraine ruined part of your week- I get those too, and they are really awful! Sometimes I feel bad for days after getting one. Well, the Switch looks neat but I probably won’t be getting one right away either. I like the idea of it not being region-locked, so hopefully they stick to that!

    1. Thank you! Migraine is such a pain, literally. It’s annoying that the medical world doesn’t seem to think that it needs a lot of attention to treat it, while so many people suffer from it. Oh well, I’ve had it again for now, let’s hope it’s gone for some time now!

      1. Yes it is! I wish there was some way to help alleviate both the pain and the frequency that some people seem to get them. I do wonder if there’s something genetic there, because my mom had migraines starting in her 20s and I started getting really bad headaches in my teens. And the older I get, the more frequent they get!

        1. I have this theory that it’s all to do with hormones. As you know I’m older now, and hit the menopaus. Ever since it has been different and to my relief, it’s less and less frequent

  5. Happy Birthday!
My boyfriend and i were going to pre order the Switch.
My boyfriend was more exided than i was and even watched the live presentation.
But we’re both a little dissapointed about the (number of) launch titles.
I thought that was the problem with het wiiu and they would do it diffrently this time.
Now we are gonna wait.. maybe the price will go down or they will have a combo pack with a game…
For me Xenoblade 2 will be the game worth buying the switch for.
I really really hope it will be a succes this time, but if even nintendo fans are waiting to buy the switch..

    1. I do seem to hear that reaction from most people. Some have pre-ordered out of their love for Zelda, and I do understand that. Because I do think the device has huge potential. I just wish they’d given us better games at launch. Also, not sure about the price. A bit steep in my opinion!

  6. I’m so mad about the paying for online thing, but that’s ok I’ll just trash my Xbox One instead lol.
I’ve already paid it off, so now I can use rest of gaming money to get extra controllers.
The Story of Seasons dev company was on the list of supporting companies for Switch.
I’m so excited for Zelda, Bomberman, Snipper Clippers, Puyo Puyo, and Arms!

    1. The online services doesn’t sit well with me either, because I wonder if this will mean we have to pay to play online with the 3DS too. I know the other companies have a similar thing going, so from a marketing point of view I understand. Still, it hurts for us nintendo fans!

  7. Happy birthday! Hope you are feeling better.

One thing I don’t like about the Switch is the online fee. You get a free game, but it will be an ancient NES/SNES title that you can only play for a month. Very poor value when compared to Sony/Microsoft.

  8. Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you feel better! Good to hear your opinions on the Switch! I’m very excited to play Zelda on the Switch first day. I would have gotten it at some point this year because of all the other launch year games that I want, but celebrating the launch with a new open-world Zelda game is too enticing. I have the system preordered and can’t wait for March!
