Slimekeep is a roguelike action game about fighting back against the slimy scourge that is invading. As you go through each round, you will get closer and closer to taking down the Slime King and winning the day.
What is Slimekeep Like to Play?
If you are looking for something similar to Enter the Gungeon that has its own unique spin, Slimekeep is just that. It has some unique elements to it too, starting with a monochromatic pixel art look that feels old and modern at the same time. It’s a cute aesthetic, and the sound design and music matches the vibe.

As you move through the world, you gain weapons, friend upgrades, and other items to help you take down the Slime King. There are some roguelite unlockable elements, but for the most part, you start each day with nothing. You need to take down slimes to get upgrades and money, heading through the procedurally generated landscape over and over again until you get good enough to finish the round.
The Pros of Slimekeep
Is this not the cutest roguelike you’ve ever seen!? I cannot get over how adorable the little slimes are. The aesthetic is dreamy, and I can’t get enough of how good it looks. Look at the Slime King; he’s perfect in every way:

I was in love with the whole look and feel of Slimekeep. Even though the game is not the type of thing I usually enjoy playing, I was enamored with the style and wanted to give it a try. As stated above, Slimekeep is cute, has great sound design, and is really polished. I didn’t come across any bugs or problems during my time playing. This feels like a labor of love that someone really poured their hearts into.

The fights seemed well-telegraphed. Even though I wasn’t super good at it, I felt like I was always edging closer to a victory even if I never got there. I still enjoyed trapsing through the world, taking down slimes, and getting better and better weaponry to make fighting and capturing slimes easier.
The Cons of Slimekeep
There isn’t a lot to dislike about Slimekeep. It’s smooth and nice to play, has nice action to the movements, and the guns are fun to unlock. Especially the guns that aren’t guns, like the bubble wand. However, I did have a couple of issues with Slimekeep that I thought should be brought up.

My first issue with Slimekeep was that there was no controller support. If any game I have played recently needed controller support, it is this one; I have a lot of issues with my hands and wrists from carpal tunnel and nerve problems, so the keyboard-only was really harsh on my hands. I ended up watching my husband play it for a long time too when my hand couldn’t take the movement anymore, and he had the same feedback: the mouse and keyboard feels unnatural to play this type of game.

My other issue was the tug of war between capturing slimes to earn passive points constantly in opposition to killing the slimes to earn money. I feel like there was a balance that I never quite struck there, and it felt kind of bad to have to pick. I think this might be something that you just have to play a heck of a lot of Slimekeep to get down to a science, and I am not sure that most players would have that kind of patience.
There was also another small issue of waiting around. You get more money or bigger upgrades if you let the slimes level themselves up before you capture or kill them, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to speed that process up. You just have to wait until the little guys have become bigger to get the extra boost from taking them down.

Conclusion
Slimekeep is a really fun game that feels like other action roguelikes, but it has its own spin on the genre. It’s fun, adorable, and well-made. Overall, it’s a great game, and I’m glad I got to play it. I am really bad at it, but I hope to get better and take down the Slime King myself.
Final Verdict: I Like it a Lot.Â
