Are you wondering what to play next? There are so many good games out there, but sometimes you just want a specific kind of game to feed your gaming hunger! How about a city building game?
In city building games you take on the role of Mayor of the city, being Mayor you control all aspects of city building and all aspects of managing it. From building that very first house to managing a budget so your city doesn’t go bankrupt, as that would never do! You will be the one in charge, now how’s that?
There are a lot of city building games available on all formats and on all kind of consoles and gaming devices but how do you pick which one you will like? Here are 5 that might be just what your looking for, all tried and tested by me. And you know I’m a big fan of the genre!
1. Cities: Skylines
Cities Skylines is one of the best city builder games there is available at the moment.
Developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive it released in 2015. This is an open ended city building game. You manage urban planing and all aspects of city building and keeping your citizens happy by providing leisure facilities and public transportation. There is also a sandbox mode where you can play unrestricted with an unlimited budget. You can find my review of Cities: Skylines here
Cities:Skylines is Available on: PC, Steam,XBox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch.
2. Townsmen
Townsmen is medieval city builder and you play the role of the king.
Send your architects and builders to plan and construct a city. But also send your craftsmen, to cut some wood and to mine ore. Make sure your fields are on fertile grounds, to get all the food for your hungry subjects!
Guide your people from their first steps in a small village to a massive medieval metropolis with thousands of inhabitants. Watch out for the change of season as your citizens require different food to be grown or the plague which can make all your citizens unwell. You can find my review of Townsmen here.
Townsmen is Available on: PC, Steam, Nintendo Switch
3. Fallout Shelter
Fallout Shelter is a slightly different city builder as you’re not building a city. Instead you are building shelter or vault for your citizens. Set in a post nuclear time you are the Overseer of the shelter which is built underground.
It’s up to you to select from a variety of modern day rooms to build the best vault. Get to know all your citizens, assign them jobs to suit their personality and lead them to happiness. Send out citizens above ground to seek adventure, survival loot or even death.
Fallout shelter is Available on: PC, Steam, iOS, Android, XBox one, PS4, Nintendo Switch.
4. Sim City
Sim City has been around for years. In fact the first Sim city game was released way back in 1989!
In the Sim City games you develop a city from a patch of undeveloped land into a large metropolis. Controlling everything from within the given budget. You must supply electricity and water for your citizens, education, health and parks and leisure. Deal with natural disasters and some unusual visitors too.
Sim City is still going strong and the latest release in the series is Sim City Buildit on iOS.
Sim City is Available on; PC, iOS, Android
5. MineCraft
Technically some might not call this a full city building game. However, with Minecraft being a sandbox game where you have no specific goals to complete, it leaves you to make the game whatever you want. There is a survival mode in which the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health. Or try out the creative mode where you have unlimited resources to build what ever you wish.
Minecraft is available on PC, Steam, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBox One.
Have any of those games caught your interest?
Hopefully there was something from my selection that suits all budding city builders!
Township is fun to play also.
Good stuff, thank you.
My go-to (at least until I overplayed it during quarantine) was Baniished
