The Premise of Times & Galaxy

In Times & Galaxy, we play as the first robot reporter for Times & Galaxy, the Solar system’s most trusted holo paper. We start at the very bottom as interns, but don’t worry—there are plenty of stories to write and move up the ladder.

As interns, we chase stories, interview witnesses, investigate crime scenes, find scoops, and write engaging stories. We also increase our paper’s readership and impress our bosses and colleagues along the way. We could keep the job if we keep it up for 17 cycles.

Gameplay

After a brief interlude, we, playing as a new journalist-intern, get on the newspaper shuttle and set off to different places around the galaxy, chasing stories ranging from shuttle crashes to intergalactic cat shows and everything in between.

We get a character creation by choosing between three models of reporter bots. We can also choose the name of our reporter, their pronouns, and their colors.

Times & Galaxy is a classic point-and-click adventure. The scenes have a bit of depth, but in general, it feels like a side-scrolling game. Moving around is done with WASD on the keyboard, and anything of interest can be investigated with the left mouse button.

Once we investigate everything on the screen and talk to all the characters—colleagues, police officers, witnesses—we get the chance to construct our own articles based on our findings. We have some equipment that can be upgraded as the game progresses—”hustle boots” for speed, a charisma hat, advanced optics, etc. It’s a witty way of dealing with the level progression for our main character.

We have a handy Build-a-Story tool for article writing, which allows us to construct our article using all the information we’ve collected. The more characters we talk to, the more choices we have on how to set the narrative and how successful our article will be. Writing good articles and pleasing our readers leaves us with a higher chance of being hired for a permanent position at the end of our internship. Also, our articles directly affect the Holo paper’s reputation and how friendly different fractions in the system are to us.

Some of the developers of Times & Galaxy are former journalists, so the game is promisingly close to how it is to be a journalist in real life.

Our holo paper has headquarters, the Scanner, and a spaceship, where we can find all the journalists and employees living together. We have a nice full map of the whole ship, even if some sections still need to be available. Walking around the ship, we meet different characters, giving us an excellent opportunity to socialize and fulfil small tasks for our colleagues while getting to know them. The staff and crew of the Scanner are from all over the system – humans, aliens, and robots, all together, each with their own personality and life.

Times & Galaxy has a bit of fun collecting, complementing the point-and-click investigative gameplay. We are tasked with collecting seeds for the Scanner’s Garden, once a thriving green paradise that has now fallen into disrepute.

Some Other Things

The version of Times & Galaxy I tried was performing more or less smoothly, with the occasional stuttering. In terms of settings, the game has basic audio settings, windowed mode, borderless, and different resolutions. As of now, there are no Steam achievements or Trading cards.

Final Thoughts

Times & Galaxy appears to be a promising game that combines investigative gameplay, character interactions, and a touch of realism from the world of journalism, making it an exciting prospect for players looking for a unique and immersive gaming experience.
