YvoCaro Plays: Work Experience

Welcome to another YvoCaro Plays!

As always, these blurbs are mostly about the video games I’m currently playing. Unedited thoughts that spring up in my mind, mostly game-related, sometimes not. Or a random train of thoughts starting with the game and ending somewhere completely different!

If you like these bits of gaming thoughts, you can find the previous ones here

Are We a Company?

“What is your companies name?” Was one of the questions I had to fill out recently. But, are we a company? I decided to look it up on Wikipedia. Here’s the definition:

“A company, abbreviated as co., is a legal entity representing an association of people, whether natural, legal or a mixture of both, with a specific objective. Company members share a common purpose and unite to achieve specific, declared goals. Companies take various forms, such as:

  • voluntary associations, which may include nonprofit organizations
  • business entities, whose aim is generating profit
  • financial entities and banks
  • programs or Educational institution”

At first I thought that would fit for LadiesGamers too. We are a voluntary nonprofit association, and our team shared a common purpose. But we are not a legal entity. Still, it feels very much like Paula and I are running a little company of our own.

Raising Our Baby

For years now we have joked about having our own corner office, swivel chair included. While in truth, of course, Paula manages things from her couch in Northern Ireland, and I work at it from behind my kitchen table in the Netherlands. We don’t call LadiesGamers a company, but rather we call it our baby. One that we nurture in hopes that it grows, all the while turning into a lovely being.

Why am I telling you all this? Because the form I had to fill out was for official business: we had a student for a couple of days doing her work-experience with us!

Abi, Paula’s eldest granddaughter, is studying graphic design and creative digital technologies at college. She asked us if she could do her three days work experience with us. We were happy to oblige of course.

Our First Intern

We couldn’t offer her an office to go to or colleagues to meet in real life. But what we could offer her was a real design project, and of course, our online environment. So, we invited Abi to our Discord to virtually meet the team and met through video chat. Well, I met Abi online, Paula, of course, has know her since the day she was born.

In the three days of working experience, Abi worked on three featured images that are on the site frequently: the one above, for YvoCaro Plays. The one for Paula’s Game Ramblings and the one for the weekly wrap up that is published on our Patreon Page.  She did a stellar job. Listening to our ideas at what the images should include. Making quick sketches to show us several drafts of how the image could look. And finally, making the sketch we chose into a lovely featured image.

Open to Work Experience

We are very happy with the results. And talking it over Paula and I decided that in future, we would be open to youngsters seeking working experience like this. It won’t be like we want hordes of students through our virtual doors, but a couple of times per year should keep it a fresh and fun experience.

Of course, we could never offer someone the experience of going to a workplace and meeting the team in person. But we do believe that we can give a taste of what it’s like to create something and really see it used on the site and social media. And as Abi has assured us, that’s an awesome feeling!
