The Gameplay of Spilled!

In Spilled! We operate a cute little red boat, cleaning up a series of four interconnected biomes from different kinds of ocean waste. We have oil spillage in the water or on the coast, a lot of plastic, and even some barrels on the bottom of the ocean to dredge up. Each time we collect trash, we unload it at a recycling station and earn coins. With the coins, we can upgrade our boat – the size of the trash tank, the size of the rake with which we collect plastic or the speed and manoeuvrability of the ship.

Sometimes, during oil spills, we might find trapped animals. Cleaning the oil will set the animal free. There are 16 animals in total. In the game’s later stages, we also have to collect oil barrels from the bottom of the ocean and deposit them at the recycling station. Hooking up a barrel to the boat is challenging but still manageable.

Upgrade stations everywhere.

Depending on the biome, we might have to put out fires on the coast or fill up bare spots with ice.

While the game is short and designed to be completed in one sitting, the gameplay is diverse enough to keep your attention.

Spilled! offers a charming blend of adorable pixelated graphics, bursting with color, paired with a calming and serene soundtrack. As we progress in cleaning up different areas, we witness a beautiful transformation as the once murky water turns a vibrant shade of blue, symbolizing the return of life and the gradual restoration of the ecosystem.

Throughout our journey along the coast, we see a variety of engaging locations, including quaint farms, innovative renewable energy installations harnessing the power of nature, and even cozy tents and ski slopes. Each environment brings its own unique charm.

The controls are intuitive and responsive, using WASD on the keyboard. There is no timer and no need to rush. Spilled! is a relaxing, cozy experience, and I wouldn’t mind more content in the future.

A job well done.

Some Side Notes

Spilled! has Steam achievements but no trading cards yet. There are basic audio options; you can choose windowed mode. Spilled! doesn’t have difficulty settings, but it is unnecessary. Also, there is no manual game saving, only automatic.

Conclusion

I played the demo of Spilled! about a year ago for an Impressions article here on LadiesGamers. I liked it so much that it went immediately to the top of my wishlist. Thankfully, the full version of the game is even better than the demo, and I will return many more times to Spilled! and its cheerful red boat.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up: Two thumbs up
