Top Tips for Day 1: Research Story

Research Story scored our golden ‘Two Thumbs Up’, as an all-encompassing simulation. I’ve gathered together some top tips for Day 1 to help you get started in your new career as a researcher at The Violet Archive.

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to me!

As part of the character customisation screen, you use the D-pad to select the date and decide which day to celebrate your birthday. In farming or life sims, I generally tend to choose something late in the year, in the hope that my good friends might be generous gift givers. However, in Research Story, you might want to have an earlier birthday, as your parents will send a cake that restores an impressive 80 energy points.

Follow the Advice

The Violet Archive

Vallee suggests and sets quests to meet the other research fellows and the druid, Rhea. It’s worth completing these on day one.

Heading south from your house, you’ll enter the centre of Shimmerbrook town, with the Archive further south near the river. As you enter the building, time freezes, allowing you to leisurely meet your research colleagues and read any available books. You’ll earn 100g for completing the quest, and Eira will provide you with a town map. The map will update with building names and opening times once you have entered them.

And I named it Hen!

Rhea can be found to the north of your house, in the Treehouse. As you work through researching an animal, she’ll give you some seed bowls (food for a chicken), the seed bowl recipe, and a creature pen (a grassy home suitable for a chicken). You’ll be able to start research on the other animals you see around the Peaks region, but you might not be able to tame them unless you buy the appropriate food or recipe from Rhea.

Read the Notice Board

What’s new?

When there is something new to read, the notice board in town will have an exclamation mark above it. It’s worth checking, as it might be a cooking or crafting recipe, for example, learning how to craft a wood fence.

Find and Greet the Carpenter

Hello Theo!

Another Shimmerbrook resident worth tracking down on day one is Theo, the carpenter. His house is to the east of your farm. Prior to his shop opening, he’ll be outside, and after hours, he’ll visit the tavern in the main town. It doesn’t matter where you meet him, but that first contact will result in a chest and chest recipe being delivered the following morning.

Successful Researching

Don’t grab them both!

It can be tempting to collect all the plants prior to starting any research. However, you’ll only gather seeds once you have fully observed the plant. As soon as you have gathered one plant, start the research, then observe the appropriate number of plants before collecting any more. For chamomile and peppermint, you only need to observe one plant, so you can observe and pick the next plant at the same time. However, the wild violet needs two observations, so find two separate plants to observe before going back to pick and collect the seeds from the first one.

Research can be abandoned at any point and restarted with a new sample. As you only have three research slots to start with, it is not possible to research the three starting plants and two day-one animals simultaneously. I started the research on the three plants, and once I’d started collecting seeds, I abandoned that research in favour of researching the animals. However, prior to picking my fully grown plants on the farm, I restarted the research so I could complete my notes.

Good Luck in your Research Story!
