We are having a great Summer of music and sport, and I’m not talking about the Proms, Glastonbury, the Euros, Wimbledon or even the Paris Olympics!
Summer of Music

At some point during the Summer, I will listen again to the incredible musicians from The Legend of Zelda Orchestra, beautifully led by Taizo Takemoto, playing music from The Legend of Zelda series. I’ve watched and, more importantly, listened to the video several times since it was released, and those starting notes give me goosebumps. I think that the opening scene from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is awesome.
Paula recently wrote a brilliant article, discussing in detail the complexities and beauty of the music from the latest in The Legend of Zelda series.
However, I’m not tied to classical renditions, and I thoroughly enjoy the toe-tapping sounds of Rayman Legends Definitive Edition.

There are a variety of beats, emphasising the jumps in the platforming. When a skilled gamer (and I’m not talking about myself here!) tackles the level, it’s a joy to watch and listen to. You also get a chance to hear a version of Eye of the Tiger (written as the theme song for the boxing film Rocky III).
Over the years, LadiesGamers has written various articles about soundtracks and music from video games; Yvonne even shared her Spotify playlist. Music in video games is often overlooked by developers, and numerous reviews mention the music being repetitive or, even worse, annoying! However, when it’s done well, it takes the gaming experience to a different level.
Summer of Sport (Mario Style)
Did you know our friendly, helpful plumber does more than platforming, rescuing Peach, and fighting Bowser? Mario is also a world-class sportsperson.

When he is not racing around the streets and circuits of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, he can be found on court, serving up an ace or two. Who knows who he might face, as some of the greatest tennis players took to the virtual court in a charity tournament during lockdown.

Then, before you know it, Mario’s off to the tee. Of course, this isn’t any ordinary game of golf. There are various maps, including the streets of New Donk City or the desert oasis of Spiky Palms. There is even a speed golf mode, where the golfers constantly swing and run, chasing the ball around the course.

When he’s finished the 18th hole, Mario heads to the pitch for a bit of soccer – battle style. It’s a fierce, brutal football match. The goalies make me smile as their actions replicate those of any of the world’s greatest goalkeepers, signalling commands to the rest of the team.

Then to chill down, what about a quick 100 metres, a freestyle swimming dash or some amazing gymnastics in the Tokyo Olympics.
Mario really is an all-round sportsperson!
Summer of Music and Sport
Whatever your plans are for the Summer, I hope you get to listen to some soul-searching music and watch/play some incredible sports, be it in real life or in video games.
Enjoy!
