A Survivor-Like with Drive

The “survivor-like” genre has become gaming’s favourite comfort food, simple to pick up, hard to put down, and always just one more run. But in a world where countless pixelated heroes are mowing down endless hordes, it takes something truly quirky to stand out. Enter Arcane Overdrive, a game that asks, “What if your survivor run happened in a magical horse-drawn wagon?”

Turns out, the answer is gloriously chaotic fun.

The Classic Formula, Reforged

If you’re new to the survivor formula, here’s the gist: you, alone, versus waves upon waves of increasingly cranky enemies. Each one you defeat drops shiny crystals, which feed your XP bar. Level up, choose a new weapon, upgrade your stats, and keep the chaos rolling until you inevitably get overwhelmed, then do it all again. It’s honestly more fun than it reads.

It’s quick, snappy, and dangerously addictive. Arcane Overdrive takes that loop and injects it with something refreshingly different: horsepower (well, actual horses), spells, and wagon wrecking.

Vehicle Shenanigans: Magic on Wheels

Here’s where Arcane Overdrive really shines: your hero isn’t running, they’re riding. Picture this: a medieval wagon pulled by horses (or not), tearing across a fantasy countryside, arms sticking out the sides, casting spells and summoning floating axes. It’s every bit as bonkers as it sounds, and it works.

The driving feels loose and fun, ideal for ploughing through packs of enemies or smashing destructible scenery. Few things relieve stress quite like ramming your magically enhanced cart through a stone wall of a house while summoning spectral blades.

The demo occasionally spices things up with mini-objectives, maybe defending an area or racing to a waypoint. They’re optional, but nice little nudges to mix up your run if you feel like doing more than just mowing down monsters.

Tinkering with the Wagon

Customisation is where Arcane Overdrive’s depth begins to show. Instead of simply choosing a character, you’re customising your wagon from the ground up, top, middle, and bottom. Each section you pick affects your vehicle’s stats and handling, along with starting weapons or special abilities. Each configuration feels a little different, inviting you to experiment until you find a setup that works.

The demo keeps customisation fairly limited, but there’s a clear promise here: the full release will expand your options significantly. And if you’re the type who loves tinkering with builds and watching the results explode gloriously on screen, that’s an exciting prospect.

A Fantasy World on the Move

Visually, Arcane Overdrive trades pixel art for a 3D fantasy world. The countryside you careen through looks pleasant enough, though perhaps a bit sparse in the demo. It’s not quite the kind of world you’ll stop to admire, mostly because you’ll be too busy steering away from trees, but it gets the job done.

The soundtrack fits the mood, too. With just enough punch to complement the magical mayhem. Still, I can’t help but hope the full release adds more variety to the environments; a few distinct biomes or hazards could do wonders for long-term replayability.

Final Thoughts: Jump in My Wagon

Arcane Overdrive doesn’t reinvent the survivor-like wheel, but it absolutely straps it to a magical wagon and sends it spinning off into the sunset. The mix of vehicle mayhem, spellcasting, and customisation makes it stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.

The demo gives just a taste of what’s possible, hinting at much more to come, from deeper build variety to richer levels. But even in its early state, it’s a blast to play. There’s an undeniable thrill in hurtling through fantasy fields while a spiked ball swings wildly from your wagon.

If you’re a fan of survivor-likes and want something that literally drives the genre forward, Arcane Overdrive is one to keep your eye on. Try the demo, hop in your wagon, cast a few spells, and let chaos reign. In the game, of course. The game is currently marked as coming soon.
