Celebrating 1 year of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Has it been one year already? Wow! I remember as if it was yesterday that my daughter and I were eagerly waiting at midnight to open up our pre-ordered digital games. We couldn’t wait to dive into a new Animal Crossing game, almost 7 years since New Leaf on the 3DS.

We sat snuggled close together starting our new islands and marveled at the colors. At the feeling of familiarity and at the same time, it was all so new and there was so much to do!

Looking back at this picture, Paula and Flora are still living on Hanalei!

I think even Nintendo must have been pleasantly surprised by how well the game did, and still does one year since release. For instance, I recently read that Animal Crossing New Horizons has become the fastest-selling Nintendo game ever launched in Europe. Over 7 million copies of the game have been sold across the continent and that means more than one-third of the 20 million-plus Nintendo Switch owners in Europe have the game on their console. And more players joining all the time.

I guess that due to circumstances there has never been a better time to retreat to a deserted island. The reality of the Covid Pandemic has made many of us into a bit of a recluse, sadly. Staying at home as much as possible is the new reality, and a lot of people spend part of their enforced time at home playing video games, alone or with their kids. And what better game to play then a relaxing, happy and positive game?

Even Isabelle is with the times!

One Year of Special Moments

To celebrate 1 year of Animal Crossing: New Horizons we asked out team and readers to delve back into their images on the Switch and relive the most special moment with us. Here they are!

Ash made a clip of the countdown at New Years Eve. What a festive moment to get us started!

Isaac reached out to us saying:
“I’ve had a lot of great memories of playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. From trying to recreate the main setting of Phineas and Ferb, to creating a wall of my fictional crushes. But my favorite memory was playing the game on my birthday. My birthday last year was not the best. It really wasn’t fun and to be honest, I didn’t really feel emotionally well that day. But playing New Horizons on my birthday made it a little bit better ( that and getting a few volumes if my favorite manga ). I especially loved seeing messages from my villagers who wished me a happy birthday. They really put a smile on my face and were so sweet and comforting. Definitely my favorite moment I’ve had in any Animal Crossing game.”

Mac-J’s visits the museum to see her arch nemesis. A creature that frightened Mac-J on more than one occasion as it came out of nowhere, scurrying across the grass towards her at night. A creature so hairy and creepy that Mac-J still has nightmares about it!

Until one night she was extremely brave and cautiously creeped towards one of the menacing creatures and snared it in her net. It now resides in it own protective vivarium in the museum.

Ha ha take that Tarantula, no more scurrying for you!!

Elena surprised her husband with a very cool venue for their anniversary! Oh how romantic!  A good thing Reese and Cyrus had given her something to work with, very sweet!

He does look very surprised…despite the rain!

I love my fake storefront. Didn’t come up with the idea myself to be honest, but the internet is brimming with ideas. My daughter made one, and of course, mom couldn’t resist to copy it.

Almost makes me long for Autumn…scratch that, bring on the Summer!

A hilarious moment in Ash’s town. Indeed, the kindness of your fellow squirrel!

For me, it has to be this picture that I’ll cherish. I love Christmas and visiting my daughters island to show off our Christmas clothes catches the moment. This is how I’ll think back on her and me playing together, checking daily turnip prices and helping each other out!
