Bravest Coconut Demo Impressions

Bravest Coconut is the cutest little cat! She wants to join the Adventurer’s Guild so she can help rid her town of a sudden infestation of monsters. Yikes!! I hope you’ll join her on this adventure. I sure enjoyed my time playing!

The Backstory of Bravest Coconut

Coco is the pet cat of a man who appears to be a game developer. I’m not sure if that will play a part in the final game, but it made for some fun dialogue as the real game began. After the dialogue about his newest game, he asked her to return his library book for him. When she got to the library, she was told that it’s been overrun with monsters!

Only members of the Adventurer’s Guild can enter because it’s too dangerous for others. Coco decided right then that she wanted to be a member of the Adventurers’ Guild!! And so the adventure began! The rest of the demo was her doing a series of quests to prove her mettle and be accepted into the guild.

Bravest Coconut
Coco is very self-aware!! More on that in the rest of the article!!

 The Gameplay of Bravest Coconut

I often need a lot of handholding when I begin a game. With Bravest Coconut, I understood what to do right away! I played on a PC with a controller. The controls were easy to master, and the on-screen dialogue taught me all I needed to know. Color me impressed!!

I love a game that knows it’s a game, that just cracks me up. Bravest Coconut absolutely knows it’s a game, and the snappy comments are frequent! Coco is equipped with a sword, which is great because there are some monsters to battle in this game. I don’t enjoy games with combat, so I was very happy when an NPC told me I could turn it off in the settings.

Thanks for that information, Mel!

So many great options!

The Action Takes Place in Charming Tambryn Valley

Bravest Coconut is a top-down, open-world pixel game. There are many paths to follow in the demo, and it looks like there will be many more in the full game. Also, in the full game, there will be a map as well as a journal to keep track of your quests. In the demo, it was obvious where I could walk and where I could not walk. It was another instance of Bravest Coconut knowing it’s a game!

Bravest Coconut
Ha! Made me laugh.

The demo includes a variety of distinct areas like the town center, an art gallery, the campground, the witch’s house and the caves. The caves are quite interesting. First off, they are full of monsters. I know many people really enjoy combat; if you are one of them, you’re going to enjoy this. On the other hand, I loved walking around the caves with my invincibility in full force!

The caves themselves are a series of mazes, which is a lot of fun. One time, I could see that I had to push a lever in order to cross a big hole, but I had to backtrack through the maze of caves to find that lever. It was a great challenge. Not too difficult but just right!

I am going to have to get to that chest somehow….

For players who enjoy combat, Bravest Coconut offers a simple damage system of 3 hearts. I can get beverages at the coffee shop in town that will restore my heart. I carry these beverages in my pocket (and somehow don’t spill them!). In addition, I can use my sword to cut down tall grasses. There seem to be hearts and coins hidden in the grass as well as within the caves. The coins I find will be useful in the full game to purchase more hearts, a map and hints.

I do not believe there is a day/night cycle in Bravest Coconut, nor is there a need to eat. After changing the settings to make myself invincible, it’s the perfect game for me. For players who enjoy combat, leaving the game in its default setting makes the game perfect for you! Lovely!

Here’s a random fun fact! The paintings on display in the art gallery were actually created by the dev’s wife! She’s quite talented.

The Quests in Bravest Coconut

The quests in the demo were not simple by any means, but they were logical, and the NPCs gave me enough hints that I could figure them out. Many of the quests were built on previously completed ones, so there was a certain order that I had to follow to complete all of them.

There were charming little comments all throughout the game, an awareness that this was all a game. At one point, I had to collect 3 items and boil them in the witch’s pot to make a potion. All I had left to do was light a fire under the pot, so a related quest was to make a torch. But once I had the torch created and lit, I had to take it to the witch’s pot in a different part of the village. So I put it in my pocket!

Yes, how am I carrying a lit torch in my pocket? Ha!!

Final Thoughts

I loved the Bravest Coconut demo! I can’t wait for the game to be released. It was developed by Little Nebula, which is a single developer studio, and a release date has not been announced yet. The demo took me about 45 minutes to play, and there are also 4 save slots, which I appreciate!

At the end of the demo, I went to the library with my badge from the Adventurer’s Guild and met one of the monsters.

Ha! Another self-aware comment from the game.

Bravest Coconut is a really charming game and so much fun to play! With all the different variations in the settings, it can be customized to be an enjoyable experience for just about any player. It’s a very thoughtfully created game and should provide between 3-5 hours of gameplay.
