Crab God invites you to dive into an underwater side-scrolling experience, where your primary goal is to guide and nurture a colony of Crablings through the dangerous ocean depths.

The Gameplay and Mechanics of Crab God

In Crab God, you assume the role of the Guardian of the Abyss, tasked with leading a Great Migration to ensure the birth of the next Crab God. The core gameplay revolves around managing your little Crabling colony, protecting the egg of your successor, and restoring coral reefs.

The game’s mechanics are pretty intuitive, allowing you to command your cute Crablings to gather food easily, fend off predators and build intricate coral structures, hunt, or stand around worshipping your monolithic crab body to generate godly powers.

You can also upgrade individual Crablings. You see, each Crabling has its own personality and potential, which you can develop over time by speeding up their movement, increasing their health and attack power, and other stats. Naming and upgrading these little creatures adds a deeper connection between you and your underwater friends; it also adds a personal touch to the gameplay.

Strategic Depth

Crab God offers a nice strategic experience. Balancing the growth of your colony with the safety of your egg from predators can be a constant challenge.

However, the game does require careful planning and food management to ensure a successful migration; if you haven’t collected enough food, you can’t migrate to the next sea level. So, you will have to make some tactical decisions about when to advance into deeper waters and when to return to safer, shallower areas.

Revitalise the Ocean Depths

The game’s ecosystem management aspect of growing new plants and coral is engaging. Furthermore, as you progress, you’ll unlock new combinations of flora and fauna, allowing your gardening crabs to create a diverse and vibrant underwater environment.

Growing new flora and fauna not only benefits your Crablings but also contributes to the overall health of the ocean ecosystem within the game. However, some players might find certain tasks repetitive over time, which can slightly dampen the overall experience.

Visuals, Atmosphere and Performance on PC

The visuals of Crab God are lovely and vibrant. The underwater environments are beautiful, with detailed coral reefs, schools of fish, and a variety of sea creatures swimming around that help bring the ocean to life. The ambient sounds and music enhance the experience, though the squeaking noise the crabs make can get irritating after a while.

Crab God ran pretty well on my laptop, though using a controller to play the game was a bit hit-and-miss, but that should be fixed before the game releases. In the end, I used the mouse to control the game and gave up on using my controller. It was also for that reason I didn’t try the game on my Steam Deck, as it still needs to be optimised to run on the Deck.

The Real-World Impact of Playing Crab God

One of the most admirable aspects of Crab God is its partnership with dots. eco, allowing you to contribute to real-world ocean conservation efforts through your in-game progress.

During your gameplay, Ritual Stones of Preservation are found on some levels that will allow you to create real-world change. You can choose which cause to support, Saving Baby Sea Turtles, Removing Ocean Plastic, Propagating Corals, Planting Trees or Protecting Marine Areas, and the developers contribute to the conservation.

Conclusion

Crab God is a fun and engaging underwater strategy game that offers a nice blend of strategic depth and ecological management, and the crablings are so cute.

While there are occasional difficulty spikes and some repetitive tasks that some players might not enjoy, the overall experience is pretty rewarding. Crab God not only entertains but also educates, and knowing that while you play the game, you are making a positive impact on the real-world environment is a great feeling.
