Freshly Frosted, a puzzle game, was announced last year in the Wholesome Direct and shown again in this year’s Wholesome Direct at the weekend, and I’ve been following the game’s progress and was excited to play it for this review. It is a sweet puzzle game involving conveyor belts and tasty-looking brightly coloured doughnuts.

Doughnuts Good Enough To Eat

You are guided through the game’s 144 levels by the calming voice of a narrator who encourages you along. You are tasked with setting up conveyor belts in the correct order, so each doughnut has the correct layers of topping by the time it reaches the delivery counter. Its premise is as simple as going from A to B.

Move From A to B

However, what starts as a simple premise becomes a tough nut to crack in the later levels as the difficulty level winds up. Although, for example, it’s pretty simple to send undecorated doughnuts from A to B, the difficulty comes in when they have to have certain toppings applied to them. Adding toppings to the doughnuts means that the conveyor belts can only be placed in a specific order, so the doughnuts pass by the correct topping machine before arriving at the delivery counter.

Add Toppings

Toppings range from frosting, whipped cream, cherries, and more; each topping must be placed in a specific order, such as frosting and then the sprinkles placed on top.

As you play through the game, new machines are introduced gradually and explained well by the soothing voice of the narrator. If you get stuck, and you will, there are a few options to help you in the settings.
You can skip a level entirely or use a hint to place a few conveyor belts in the correct positions to help you get started. I like both options; the hints are usually all the help you need, and they never give away the solution to the puzzle.

Twelve Boxes of Doughnuts

In all, there are twelve boxes of doughnuts puzzles to play through; each box of doughnuts has twelve levels to complete. So there is certainly enough to keep you playing and puzzled for a good while. The narrator explains that each box has something new to add as a mechanic. Such as the order swapped around, having paths split, merging paths, and other ways to add lots of variety to the simple mechanics of this game

Visuals and Controls

Visually, the game makes me happy with its bright, vibrant colours, and you cannot help but have a little celebration once you have completed a puzzle. Additionally, you get to listen to a very chill soundtrack that backs up the puzzling fun and adds to the relaxed atmosphere the game gives off. You can also watch the doughnuts move in sync with the music’s beat which is a nice touch.

The joy-cons control the game, and it all works smoothly and as it should.

Star-shaped doughnuts make an appearance, they look good enough to eat.

Conclusion – Good Enough to Eat

Overall, Freshly Frosted is a delightful game and has all a puzzle fan would need in a game. Decent puzzles that aren’t frustrating, chill music, and the narrator’s soothing voice make this one of my favourite puzzle games I have played this year. Though the game should come with a warning as it does leave you with a craving for doughnuts.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up Two thumbs up
