Game Soundtracks We Love: Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana

Game of Choice

Ys VIII is an action rpg that originally released on Vita, then PS4, PC and finally Nintendo Switch. It was one of my favourite games that I reviewed last year. Ys VIII has a pretty rockin’ soundtrack but there are some gentler tunes in the game. As it has quite a sizeable tracklist.

While not a track I care for in comparison to others, we have Lacrimosa of Dana. Lacrimosa being Latin for weeping.

As a game with a lot of combat encounters, there are thankfully multiple fight songs. Deadly Temptation being one of the boss themes you’ll hear (and there are many many boss fights). If you’re not sure you’re in for another boss fight this music will let you know.

In Ys VIII you often have to defend your base from the various monsters that inhabit the island. Red Line is a hard rock tune that really gets you in the mood to defend home.

Some missions you’ll have to do involve sneaking around the sleeping monsters to get specific ingredients. For such an occasion you might think there’d be music with an appropriate atmosphere. Instead we get Night Survivor a loud electro song with some piano in as well.

Dana is an important character to the story though you don’t encounter her for sometime. The console versions came with new playable content for her. This song stands out and suits the areas she fights in.

My favourite track is A Waterdrop in the Dark. For some reason it gives me the feeling of a Pikmin song although I’m not sure it’s an accurate comparison. This tune plays in some cave areas.

Final Thoughts

Ys VIII is a great action RPG with a massive killer soundtrack to boot. It’s available on both Vita and Switch (plus PC and PS4) but the Switch version comes with more playable content than the original, and the DLC costumes are free!

Which of these songs did you like best, and are there any games with varied soundtracks that you love?

  1. Honestly my favorite song of the whole soundtrack is Ricordo (italian for memory). The title suits it and the song just tugs at your strings whenever it plays during sad moments. Just hearing it now makes me all teared up T_T
There are a lot of other great songs too, and a good compilation for everyone else to know about this game.
