Premise
In the shop management game Leafy Corner, we play as the new owner of a cute little plant shop. We grow, sell, and care for a variety of real-life plants, help customers fulfill their wishes, complete orders, and customize our shop.
The Gameplay
We start the game by creating our own character. We have a good selection of hairstyles, hair colors, and even some different clothing options. After that, we are immediately dropped into our new shop. We have a handy tutorial to show us what we are doing and how. The tutorial will immediately show us the store, since it is where we will source our plants and buy our furniture and decorations.
We start with a basic room, but as the game progresses and we accumulate wealth, we can purchase expansions for the shop. Also, we have access to the store at any point, so we can buy furniture and plants to our hearts’ content. The initial options are a little simplistic in style but still very workable. I assume that at a later point the developers may add more furniture and decorations. The colors of the walls, floor, and furniture are free.
As for the plant selection, we start off small, with three unlocked plants. As we progress, we unlock more plants. One thing to note is that we first need to buy pots, then seeds to plant in the pots. Then, of course, comes the watering, and voilà, we have sellable plants.
We have an ongoing task list, and while it is certainly helpful to review it, it is not strictly necessary. The tasks are such that we don’t need to go out of our way to complete them. We have tasks such as “plant new plants”, “Earn cash,” or “Sell plants”, which we will fulfill in any case and then get awarded for that. Even more specialized tasks such as “Sell a pet-friendly plant” or “Reach mature plant growth stage” will be completed at some point. Each fulfilled task will grant us plant tokens, which we can use to unlock more of the 100+ plants featured in Leafy Corner.
Each plant has a description page in the store, and we can view it at any time once the plant is unlocked. We can see things like how often we need to water it, whether it is pet-friendly, or how the price progresses as the plant matures. Knowing these needs and traits will help us when fulfilling customer orders.
In terms of plant care, each plant has its own needs, but since this is a cozy, relaxing game, Leafy Corner will tell you when a plant needs to be watered. A white droplet will appear over it. When you start watering the plant, the droplet will begin to fill with blue. We need to be careful not to overwater the plant, as this will cause its roots to rot, but if we stop just at the top of the drop, the plant is perfectly watered. Also, if you keep it underwater, it will be fine; you will just need to water it more often. We can also repot the plants into new pots, which will reset their watering needs.
Also, mature plants can be propagated to create new seedlings. This will slow the main plant’s growth. Some plants can grow into special varieties with unique colors or patterns. If we propagate a new variety of plants, the new seedling will keep the unique traits. Another thing about plants is that if you have a favorite in the store, you can mark it as not for sale and keep it for as long as you want.
An important feature of our plant shop is our reputation. As we complete goals, our reputation grows. A higher reputation attracts more customers and unlocks new shop features, such as shop extensions. On the reputation tab, we can see where we are and what the next level will unlock.
Customers arrive throughout the day. Some of them just get whatever plant they want. Others will ask for help or specific plants. We can accept or decline them or just ask them to wait until we can fulfill the request. Once our customer has their plants, they will wait patiently at the till while we take their money.
The good thing is that there are no timers or time limits in Leafy Corner. We can even close the store if we get overwhelmed. To close the store, we interact with the door sign. When the store is closed, no new customers will enter, but those already in the store can still be served. This is a good time to rearrange furniture, place decorations, and stock new plants.
Some Other Things
Leafy Corner has an extensive options menu that includes various audio and video settings, as well as remappable controls. We also have many gameplay settings that let us customize the management experience, such as whether our plants can die, whether we need to water them regularly, whether we can get hints, and so on. Essentially, it allows us to adjust the game’s difficulty setting. We also have several save slots, which allow us to have different playthroughs without necessarily deleting our progress.
The game has Steam achievements, but no Trading cards yet.
Conclusion
Leafy Corner is a very good plant shop simulation game. It might look a bit simplistic, but I think that works in the game’s favor. There are no timers; controls are simple and intuitive; the gameplay mechanics are basic; and the game design is very cute. All in all, Leafy Corner can work very well as a relaxing, plant-themed game with a bit of strategy and puzzle elements to go along with the decorating. If you are in the mood for some simple fun, Leafy Corner might just be the game for you.
Final Verdict: I Like it a Lot
