Quijote: Quest for Glory Early Impressions

Code provided with many thanks to Cubus Games.

Based on Spanish Literature

Quijote: Quest for Glory is a tactical card strategy game. It’s based on the work of Miguel de Cervantes. He was a famous Spanish writer best known for his novel Don Quixote. It’s this book that the game that takes its inspiration. The developers kindly provided us with a code to cover this new title which was recently released to Early Access on Steam.

If you’re new to Early Access this is where developers can put up a game for sale which is still in development. It’s an opportunity for gamers to support the game through development while also experiencing the game update and change. The downside though is there is no guarantee the game will finish or how long it will take to complete. With that out the way allow me to babble about Quijote.

Knights Quest

The plot follows the adventures of Don Quixote. A brave and powerful knight in search of the eternal flame. I’ll be honest I have never read the book this was based on but after playing this title it certainly made me interested to learn more. You follow Don Quixote through the adventure which is presented in a board game style.

When you enter a level your character and NPCs appear like solid figures sliding around the level. When you engage with enemies the art style shifts to a more comic book style art style. The game does present with English text but currently only has Spanish voice acting.

Draw a Card

The game plays as an interactive tactical card game. When you enter a level you are given the main objective such as collecting all your armour or taking out all the enemies on the board. Each turn you draw some cards. You need to play cards to move and interact with objects in the environment. You can also play special cards to activate useful effects like pausing enemy movement and moving you directly behind an enemy. If you can’t play any cards you can discard them to hopefully obtain a better hand. You can also obtain more cards by finding books scattered around the level.

Card Battle

When you do engage in battle with enemies you then enter a card battle with a different deck of cards. These cards are a mixture of attack and defence. In the level I played you were able to see some of the cards in advance that the enemy is about to play, so you can play a suitable card against it. However, one card is usually hidden so you just have to make your best guess. It’s a game where you can take your time with planning your moves which will certainly appeal to the thinking gamer.

Controls only require the mouse, you click on the cards you want to play as well as where you want to move and interact on the map. You can also rotate the 3D level by moving your cursor to the far left or right sides of the screen. If you fail due to a bad hand of cards, or maybe you just played the wrong one, you simply restart from the beginning of the level. I certainly enjoyed what I did but the game has very little content in this early stage of development.

Early Stage

Quijote : Quest for Glory is probably one of the earliest in development Early Access games I have previewed. There are currently only two levels to playthrough. There is no English voice acting and no tutorials on how to play the game. I just kinda figured things out, like the game’s mechanics and camera controls, by just messing around a bit like the old days of gaming. With that, it’s incredibly hard to give my impressions. I can certainly see the potential of this game and I hope that over the months it gets regular updates and forms into an impressive turn-based experience. I really like the lore this game is based on. It appears the developers have a lot of love for the novel it’s based on and wants to share it with the world. If you want to take the risk the price of entry as it stands is incredibly generous. So if you want to support the developers and really see a game come together from a very early stage then have at it.

Quijote Quest for Glory is available in Early Access on Steam now. No other platforms have been announced at this stage.
