Tips and Tricks for Paper Mario: The Origami King

There has been a lot of attention payed to Paper Mario: The Origami King and not all of it has been the “good” kind of attention. The game isn’t in the same vein as the previous Paper Mario games, especially not like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Gone are the familiar RPG elements to the game and these have been replaced by a more puzzle-like battle setting, as I’m sure you know if you have been following the game.

I’ve been playing the game since release day and it has more of a feel of an Adventure game then an RPG. In my humble opinion I don’t think it is a bad thing to change it up a bit. I’m enjoying the game immensely with its puzzle style battles and it has lots of humour, it is meant to be a game you play at your own pace and not rush through it to the end!

So I thought I would come up with some tips and tricks for playing Paper Mario: The Origami King that you may not already know and that you might find useful.

Tips and Tricks

Whack Everything!

There are hundreds of hidden Toads throughout the Paper Mario world, the more Toads you find, the more Toads can help during the battles. That is, if you want to use them as it’s optional. Toads also give coins to you once they are found and depending on the Toads you find that can also grant you access to new shops.

So, hit everything you see with Mario’s trusty Hammer. Trees, flowers, blocks, everything! Once you’re further into the game you do get a special item to help you locate Toads. You can also keep using the hammer as it’s a lot of fun whacking things. When you’re in the field, walk along almost everything as anything can be a Toad.

Return to previously visited area as it’s a semi open world and you may have missed something on the first journey through an area.

Not-Bottomless Holes and Confetti

As you explore Paper Mario use confetti on every hole you find as they will give you coins and usually quite a lot of them. Always make sure that the confetti bag is full by using Mario’s hammer and whacking everything to restock the bag.

Take A Seat

When you come across a bench while in the field, you can sit on it and if Mario’s HP is low it will be restored, and it saves using the Mushroom items to restore the HP and you can keep them for more a important time, like combat.

Shops

Make sure to visit the shops often as you can stock up on essential items like Fire Flower or the Steel Boots. All weapons except Mario’s regular Boots and Hammer will break after multiple uses, so its handy to have more in your equipment bag.

Visit The Lab To Practice Battle Skills

Battle Lab

Once you have progressed the story a little, the Battle Lab unlocks. After it unlocks the Lab opens in Toad Town. It’s worth visiting the Lab often as the Toad in the Lab will have various devices that are free to use in battles. You can also practice your Battle skills in the Lab if you need a reminder of what to do.

Battle Field

Battles

Before a battle starts if you press and hold the Y button you can call the Toads for help during battles, if you need help that is. You can give up to 999 coins per round of combat to get the Toads to help. In turn the Toads can preform random effects before the battle starts. Some of these are: free health power-ups, free ring rotations, extra damage or any combination of those.

Watch the Battle Field

Keep an eye on the battle field when the battle starts before the enemies are rotated on the spinning battle wheel as their starting place before they move will be a big clue in helping you lining them up in to straight lines and a 2×2 grid.

Hit Them First

Toads Helping Before A Battle

If you come across an enemy out in the field it’s a great idea is to hit them first when you spot them. Either a whack with the hammer or jump on them to score a bounds hit at the start of a battle.

Battle Time Goes Quickly

It’s a good idea to check the clock during a battle, it’s found on the top right of the screen and is important to keep an eye on as you don’t want to run out of time when your lining up the enemy on the wheel. If you do run out you could be left with an un-even line up, which results in a longer battle.

Right Tool For The Right Job

Excellent Hit

Keep an eye on what item you can use during battles, such as selecting the right equipment for the right job. Using the Steel Boots to jump on Spiked Shells A.K.A a Spiny is more effective and less painful for Mario when jumping on them with.

How Many Actions During A Round?

Check the top left side of the screen and you will find the number of you have available for the round.

Give Yourself More Time

By pressing the minus button you can spend some coins to extend the timer, very handy if it’s a tricky battle wheel you’re faced with.
