Ben’s E3 Reactions

Welp, as this years E3’s big presentations wrap up, I thought I would reflect on what’s been revealed and showcased. My overall feelings are that there wasn’t any huge surprises, though there were still plenty of cool reveals.

What Went Well For Me?

Well referring back to my expectations post, I got to see the new Kingdom Hearts DLC, Spyro is heading to Switch and most importantly, Animal Crossing has had a trailer released and some gameplay showcased (more on that in a mo). That’s a pretty good takeaway already!

It was awesome to see a teaser for the next big Zelda release. Breath Of The Wild is an amazing game, it’s no surprise to see the sequel building on the impressive foundations. I would defend Nintendo had one of the stronger presentations in terms of quality and consistency.

What Didn’t Go So Well

As mentioned at the very beginning, I personally found the lack of any big reveals or surprise moments a little disappointing. I’m not sure what I expected but that’s the point! The Smash Bros. character reveals were good but nothing out of the ordinary. I was sad not to have some of my dreams about ports such as Kingdom Hearts, Mario or Zelda. But alas, there’s still plenty on the horizon and in my back catalogue too.

Let’s Face It Though… ANIMAL CROSSING!

Oh yes, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Loving the name, and despite my expectations I am really digging the way it looks. Despite them seemingly cutting a lot out – such as shops and other buildings – they’ve really streamlined the Animal Crossing experience. I think this return to roots and refreshing look is a brilliant move. There were loads of neat details both great and small. Placing and moving furniture outside is a welcome addition that loads of fans have been calling for. Collecting materials and crafting has built upon the Pocket Camp foundations well. Little details like the wind, sounds of nature and vaulting over the river were wonderful.

I had a lot of hopes for the game, including 3D camera, social meters, a denser high street and larger exploration. Some of those might be deconfirmed, but there’s still time for them to announce/add more. Overall, I’m still really excited on the course the game is currently taking. Time to get back to speculating what might make it into the final game haha

All in all, it was a good E3 for me. Not great but still plenty to anticipate!
