Cris Tales Demo Impressions (Steam)

Cris Tales is an upcoming turn based RPG coming to the Switch in 2020. It’s one I’m looking forward to playing. Currently there is a demo available on Steam so I’ll give my impressions based on that, here.

Past

After chasing a top-hat wearing frog, Crisbell gains the ability to see past, present and future simultaneously. With this power you are able to make decisions to influence the future and immediately see the effect it had. This is used both in and out of combat. For example you might need a particular fruit that isn’t bearing yet, but can use Matias (the frog) to hop to the future to grab one.

Present

Combat is a turn based rpg, with extra input to gain extra damage or take less. Crisbell is able to send foes to the future. Usually this might make them stronger, but other affects can be applied. In the boss fight if you get your ally to wet them, then send to them future, their shield will be rusted. It seems that a lot off fights may use a similar pattern to give yourself an advantage.

Future

Cris Tales is in a beautiful 2D art style, with a nice soundtrack and voice acting. Now that I’ve played the demo I have an understanding of how the time mechanic works with both story and gameplay. Even in the demo I was able to make a permanent story decision, meaning it’s likely a game worth repeat playthroughs. My only real issue with the game so far is the computer controls, and as I’m going to pick up the Switch version that won’t be a problem.
