Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe – A Fiery Arcade Title

After playing the demo not too long ago, I was already feeling pretty optimistic about Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe!. Now that I’ve had the chance to play through the full release, I’m pleased to say those positive first impressions have only grown stronger.

This is one of those games that doesn’t really reinvent arcade gaming. Instead, it takes a familiar formula, adds one genuinely clever twist, and delivers a wonderfully addictive experience that’s incredibly easy to pick up and play. Sometimes that’s all you really need.

The easiest way I can describe it is this: imagine Bubble Bobble, except the dragons behave like actual dragons and breathe fire everywhere instead of trapping enemies in bubbles. That’s obviously simplifying things a little, but it’s the comparison that kept coming back to me throughout my time with the game. At under five pounds, it also feels like excellent value for anyone who enjoys classic arcade action.

Simple Arcade Fun Done Right

You control a cute little dragon, either alone or alongside a friend in local co-op, and your goal is to clear each single-screen stage of enemies before progressing to the next one. That’s the entire loop, but it’s one that’s remained entertaining for decades for a reason.

The game is split into multiple worlds, each containing a healthy number of handcrafted stages. One feature I particularly appreciated is that once you’ve completed a world, you can restart from that world rather than having to begin the entire adventure again. If you prefer the more traditional arcade experience, though, you can always start from World One and challenge yourself from the beginning. There’s also a dedicated Score Attack mode for those who simply want to chase leaderboard positions and perfect their runs.

Fire Changes Everything

While the structure clearly pays tribute to classic arcade platformers, Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! has one mechanic that gives it its own identity. Instead of simply shooting enemies until they disappear, your fire breath actually sets them ablaze.

Once burning, enemies continue moving around the stage while gradually taking damage. If they touch other enemies, those enemies catch fire too. They can even ignite certain parts of the environment, leading to satisfying chain reactions that reward careful positioning. Of course, if patience isn’t your thing, you can simply continue firing to finish burning enemies off instantly.

What I really enjoyed was the little layer of strategy this creates. Sometimes it’s worth letting a burning enemy wander through a group before defeating it. Other times it’s far safer just to eliminate it immediately, because while it’s still alive, it can still hurt you. It’s a simple mechanic, but one that adds considerably more depth than you might expect.

Destructible Stages

The fire doesn’t only affect enemies either. Certain sections of the environment can also be burned away, causing platforms to collapse or opening up new routes around the level. It immediately reminded me of BurgerTime in places, and it adds another tactical layer to the action. Sometimes you’ll deliberately destroy part of the scenery to reach a difficult enemy. Other times you’ll accidentally drop a platform on yourself because you weren’t paying enough attention. I may have done that more than once.

Because every stage is handcrafted rather than procedurally generated, you gradually learn layouts, enemy placements and the best strategies for tackling each level. It captures that classic arcade feeling of slowly mastering a game through practice rather than relying on random generation.

Small Extras Add Variety

Alongside defeating enemies, there are plenty of little bonuses scattered throughout the stages. Collecting letter pickups can unlock bonus areas, while various power-ups appear to spice things up. My favourite is the chilli pepper, which upgrades your fire into a satisfying spread shot. There are also defensive power-ups, such as a ring of fire, that protects your dragon for a short time.

None of these completely change the game, but they add enough variety to keep each run feeling fresh. The controls themselves are wonderfully straightforward. Jumping feels responsive, movement is smooth, and I particularly appreciated being able to fire upwards as well as horizontally. It makes dealing with flying enemies much more enjoyable than simply waiting for them to descend.

A Few Arcade Frustrations

As much as I enjoyed my time with Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe!, there are a couple of design choices that I think some players may find a little unforgiving. The biggest one is the overall time limit. Rather than simply timing individual stages, you’re working against a timer across an entire world. You can earn more time by completing levels quickly or collecting certain bonuses, but there’s always that pressure hanging over you. Personally, I would have loved an optional casual mode that simply removed the timer altogether. Sometimes I just wanted to enjoy the levels, experiment with the fire mechanics and take everything at my own pace without feeling rushed.

Similarly, the game sticks closely to old-school arcade traditions with its limited lives. Lose them all and you’ll be starting the world over again. For players chasing that authentic arcade experience, this will probably be exactly what they’re looking for. For others, especially newcomers, an optional, more forgiving mode would have made the game even more accessible without taking anything away from the intended challenge.

Conclusion:  Hot Hot Hot

Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! feels like a genuine love letter to arcade classics. Yes, its inspirations are obvious, but it never feels like a simple copy. The fire mechanics, destructible environments and satisfying chain reactions give it an identity of its own while still capturing everything that made those older games so enjoyable.

Whether you’re playing alone, tackling it with a friend in local co-op, or simply chasing high scores, it’s incredibly easy to fall into that familiar “just one more level” mindset. Would I have liked a few optional accessibility features, such as removing the overall timer or offering unlimited continues? Absolutely. But even with those small criticisms, this remains a thoroughly enjoyable arcade platformer that’s packed with addictive gameplay and plenty of retro appeal.

If you’re looking for a straightforward, affordable game that captures the spirit of the arcade era while adding a few clever ideas of its own, Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! is well worth igniting on Pc or Steam Deck.
