Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! – So Good You Say it Twice

Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! immediately gives off that classic arcade energy. You know the type, short levels, simple controls, and that “just one more go” feeling creeping in before you even realise it. After spending some time with the demo, I came away pleasantly surprised. It wears its Bubble Bobble inspirations very openly, but it also adds just enough of its own ideas to make things feel fresh rather than just familiar. If you’ve ever wondered what a certain bubble-based arcade classic might look like if everything was a bit more… flammable, this is pretty close.

Something sweet about this game

Quick To Jump Into

You play as a fire-breathing dragon (or two, if you bring a friend along), moving through single-screen stages filled with enemies. Clear the screen, move on to the next level, repeat. That’s it, and honestly, that’s exactly what you want from a game like this. There’s no long introduction, no complicated systems to learn. Within seconds, you’re jumping around platforms and blasting fireballs at anything that moves, springs or flies. Enemies have various patterns in this game.

Fire Changes Everything

At first glance, the mechanics seem very familiar: jump, shoot, avoid enemies from the dreaded touch of death. But the fire mechanic is where things start to get interesting. Instead of enemies just disappearing on contact, they catch fire. Once ignited, they’ll slowly burn out… unless you hit them again to finish them off instantly, and in some ways put them out of their misery.

That alone would be a neat twist, but the real fun comes from how fire spreads. Burning enemies can ignite other enemies or objects they touch, leading to chain reactions across the level. Suddenly, you’re not just reacting, you’re setting things up. You might tag one enemy and let it wander into a group, watching everything catch fire in a satisfying cascade. Just try not to get caught by the enemies in the process.

The environments aren’t just there to look nice either; they play into the mechanics. Certain parts of the level can be burned away, causing platforms above to drop down, think Burger Time. This can open up new paths, block enemies, or even take them out if you time it right. Just try not to get squished in the process. I’ll admit, I wasn’t always the most successful at pulling off clever plays, but the option being there adds depth.

Quick, Addictive Play

The pacing is one of the demo’s strongest points. Levels are short and snappy, making it very easy to fall into that “just one more level” mindset. Before long, you’ve cleared a full batch of stages, getting a high score without really thinking about it.

It’s also worth noting that this sticks fairly close to classic arcade difficulty. You’ve got limited lives, and if you lose them all, you’re heading back to the start of the world. It’s not overly punishing, but it does keep you on your toes.

Co-op Adds To The Fun

The demo supports local co-op, letting a second player jump in as another dragon. This feels like a natural fit for the game. The chaos (the good kind) of two players bouncing around, setting things on fire and trying not to get hit adds a whole new layer of fun. It’s the kind of game that would feel right at home as an arcade cabinet with two players side by side.

Pixel Roots

Visually, the game leans heavily into that retro pixel style. Everything is bright, colourful and easy to read, which is exactly what you want for this type of experience. Enemies are clear, platforms are well defined, and nothing gets lost in the action.

That said, the dragon characters themselves don’t quite stand out as much as they could. They’re perfectly fine, but they don’t have that instantly recognisable spark you might expect from a mascot-style game. It’s a small thing, but a bit more personality in their design would go a long way.

On the audio side, the chiptune soundtrack does a great job of tying everything together. It fits the pace nicely and keeps that arcade feel consistent throughout.

Final Thoughts

Based on what’s available in the demo, Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! feels like a solid foundation for a full release. It’s easy to pick up, enjoyable in short bursts, and has just enough mechanical depth to keep things interesting. The fire-spreading system is the standout feature and gives the game its identity. It doesn’t necessarily reinvent the genre, but what it does, it does well.

The demo left me wanting more, which is always a good sign. Dragon Dragon Fire Fire Deluxe! is shaping up to be a fun, accessible arcade platformer that’s ideal for quick sessions, score chasing, and a bit of co-op play. If you enjoy classic arcade-style games with a small twist, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

And honestly? If this were sitting in an arcade somewhere, I’d absolutely be dropping coins into it for another go.
