FlipScapes Hits Early Access

FlipScapes is a pinball-pachinko hybrid that recently launched in Early Access on Steam. While still in development, the game shows a lot of promise for fans of action-packed, casual gaming sessions. If you enjoy fast-paced pinball mechanics with a modern twist, FlipScapes offers a refreshing experience that you can enjoy in short bursts. Let’s dive into what this early version of the game has to offer and why it might be worth keeping an eye on.

Fingers on the Flippers

The game features multiple levels spread across various planets, each with its own unique theme. The objective at each level is straightforward, usually requiring you to hit blocks and make them disappear. However, the game does mix things up from time to time by introducing different challenges, like collecting bananas or defeating bosses.

To accomplish these tasks, you’ll need to hit metal balls with pinball paddles. If you’re familiar with traditional pinball, the controls will feel intuitive and second nature. When using a controller, the triggers are used to operate the left and right paddles, which feel comfortable and responsive, mimicking the experience of a real pinball table.

New Tricks and Abilities

Unlike classic pinball, FlipScapes introduces several new mechanics to enhance the gameplay. Since the flippers are often spaced far apart, the game allows you to use the left stick to nudge the ball left or right, giving you more control over its direction. Holding the stick in one direction even slows down time temporarily, allowing you to get your bearings and aim your shot more precisely. A cooldown limits this slow-motion mechanic, so it can’t be spammed, making it a strategic tool to prevent your ball from plummeting into the abyss.

Adding to the fun, FlipScapes also allows you to select from several alien-like characters, each with their own unique ability. These abilities can be activated once you’ve collected enough energy during a level. One character might summon multiple balls to flood the table, while another can rewind time to undo a mistake. This character-based system offers a layer of strategy, as you can swap characters to suit the needs of each level. If you’re struggling with one stage, experimenting with different characters and their abilities might be the key to success.

This design element is reminiscent of Peggle, another game where you clear a board with the help of special character abilities. The addition of powers in FlipScapes helps break up the more traditional pinball mechanics, making the game feel dynamic and giving players something new to master in each level.

Vibrant, Family-Friendly Graphics

Visually, FlipScapes adopts a colourful 3D aesthetic that feels vibrant and family-friendly. Each planet features a distinct theme, ranging from underwater environments to icy landscapes complete with snowmen. The character models and environments are charmingly simple yet appealing, creating an arcade-like atmosphere that’s lighthearted and fun.

The game’s audio complements this atmosphere well. Each level has its own soundtrack, which helps build tension as the ball careens through the obstacles. Despite the tension, the music and visuals create an overall welcoming experience, making FlipScapes a game that can appeal to players of all ages.

Early Access Challenges

While FlipScapes has a strong foundation, it’s evident that the game is still a work in progress. With not all levels currently available, the Early Access version feels more like a generous demo. Some rough edges are noticeable, such as longer load times and the ball’s speed feeling a bit too fast at tighter levels, making it hard to track. However, the developers have been open about the game’s current state and have outlined a roadmap for future updates on their Steam page.

These minor issues are likely to be ironed out as the game continues through its Early Access phase. The current version shows a lot of potential, and the developers seem committed to improving the experience. With updates on the horizon, FlipScapes is already shaping up to be a fun, addictive game that you can enjoy in short bursts, making it a perfect fit for casual gaming on platforms like Steam Deck.

A Promising Start

Despite its early access limitations, FlipScapes offers an entertaining twist on the pinball genre. The character abilities, creative level design, and colourful presentation combine to make each level feel like a fresh, engaging challenge. As the game evolves, it could easily become a go-to option for players who enjoy chasing high scores or simply want a game they can dip into when they have a few spare minutes.

Whether you’re looking to support the developers early on or just want a fun, casual game to add to your collection, FlipScapes is definitely worth keeping on your radar. You can even check out the free demo on Steam to see if it’s your cup of tea.
