If you’re looking for a cosy exploration game with a rogue-lite twist, Into the Emberlands on Steam early access might be the game for you. It offers a unique blend of adventure and village-building mechanics, all set in a beautifully crafted, ever-changing world.

First Steps into the Emberlands

The light will help you see your way through the Miasma.

Into the Emberlands puts you into the role of the Lightbearer, a chosen hero tasked with dispelling the mysterious Miasma (darkness) threatening the charming world of the Knacks. Armed with a lantern fueled by light-bringing embers, your mission is to explore the dark areas, rescue Knacks, and rebuild their town. The lantern is not just a tool but a lifeline; if its light fades, you too will be lost in the Miasma until a new Lightbearer emerges.

Your journey begins in the quaint village of the Knacks, a friendly community in desperate need of your help. The initial setup does a great job of immersing you into the world of the Knacks, with lush visuals and a soothing soundtrack that sets the tone for the adventure ahead. The tutorial is good, and it introduces you to the basic mechanics of exploration, resource collection, and village management without overwhelming you.

Exploration and Surprises in the Dark

The exploration element is where Into the Emberlands really shines. The world in Emberlands is procedurally generated, meaning that no two journeys are the same. As you journey through the various biomes, each is filled with its own flora and fauna. You’ll encounter a variety of quirky and weird creatures. The game’s art style and creature design are cute, adding plenty of charm to the game and also an air of mystery to the Emberlands.

The Rogue-lite Twist and Rebuilding the Village

The rogue-lite aspect of Into the Emberlands adds a layer of complexity and replayability. Each expedition into the Miasma is filled with both small challenges and discoveries. The constant threat of your ember lantern fading keeps you on your toes, adding a sense of urgency to your explorations. If the lantern fades, the screen turns black, and you are returned to the Knacks village to begin again.

For me, one of the most fun aspects of Into the Emberlands is the village-building component. As you rescue lost Knacks and gather resources, such as wood and stone, you can expand and upgrade their village. Building new homes and amenities not only enhances the village visually but also provides practical benefits for your future expeditions into the Miasma. Each new building and vendor offers valuable upgrades, giving you a head-start on your next quest.

Upgrades and Roadmap

The support you receive from the various inhabitants of the Emberlands is helpful for your task. Helping villagers can yield essential resources and upgrades for your equipment, making each interaction important. The sense of community and the impact of your efforts is rewarding, and it creates a satisfying gameplay loop.

Developers Tiny Roar has released a road map for the game as it moves through the Early Access stage. There are plans to include more Lightbearers and unlockable pets, as well as new resources and tools.

Final Thoughts

Into the Emberlands is a promising title that offers a really enjoyable and engaging experience even in its early access stage. Its blend of exploration, rogue-lite elements, and village-building mechanics create a game that’s both relaxing and exciting at the same time. The world is full of charm and surprises, and the procedural generation ensures endless replayability.

While there are areas that could benefit from further polish and balance adjustments, the foundation laid by the developers, Tiny Roar, is pretty solid. There is potential for this game to grow and evolve, and I look forward to seeing how it develops.

For now, Into the Emberlands is well worth your time, especially if you’re a fan of cosy, exploration-driven games with a touch of rogue-lite challenge. Grab your lantern and step into the Miasma, as the Knacks need your help to get back home. You can find the Into the Emberlands Steam page here.
