Build Your Own Band With Legends of Rock

I was genuinely excited to play Legends of Rock, since one of the main attributes I love about video games is their soundtrack and music. It also goes without saying that my family loves listening to Rock music of all kinds, so I definitely had to give it a go!

Legends of Rock is a pixel-art time management game set in Norway. Your main quest is to build your legendary rock band and work your way up in the industry to fulfill your dream of living like a true rockstar.

Legends of Rock Map city of Oslo on Day 1.
Arriving in Oslo! A new adventure begins.

You start the game, in this case as Andy, a guy who moved from his small town in the Norwegian countryside to Oslo to pursue his dream of starting a new band in the city. Sadly, you arrive in this city all broke, and with your guitar being stolen.

Just as in a real-life setting, you need to get a job to buy a new guitar and sustain your life in this new place.

Gameplay of Legends of Rock

The controls are really simple. Legends of Rock is basically a point-and-click game too, since you can do everything just by clicking on the items. The need to use the keyboard is minimal, only to name your band or music albums.

The game is a little bit tricky in the beginning, since there isn’t a real tutorial to guide your first steps. It only offers you a list of tasks you need to complete, from talking to people, starting a job, to writing your first songs, building your band, and performing your first concert.

Legends of Rock Small Talk Task: Congratulations Task Completed.
As an introvert, I am reminded by this game not to be afraid to reach out to people and talk to them.

If you’re anything like me, a curious gamer who clicks everything she sees on the map to discover what’s next, you’re good to go. You’ll soon discover that the buildings with names on them are the ones you’ll have access to during your playthrough.

Building Your Rockstar Life

Once you start getting around, you’ll meet new people with whom you can create new friendships, ask for a job, and even find new bandmates! Whenever you click on a new person, you’ll get 3 commands: you can either make small talk, ask them to join your band, or leave wishing them a nice day.

One thing I wish Legends of Rock included is different small talk dialogues, as it felt at times like I was spamming the “small talk” button and getting the same dialogue option with no different outcomes until you magically become friends with people and proceed to join your band after a conversation.

Finding bandmates is actually pretty easy.

Since Legends of Rock is a management game at its core, each day you can choose how to spend your time. The more you progress within the game, the more “responsibilities” you have. You will need to balance your day job, songwriting, rehearsals, and playing gigs, while also surviving on instant noodles or pizza.

This game is a great mix of a real-time management setting with a fictional feel. Every choice affects your character’s attributes. You can improve your musical skills by practising; listening to music to boost inspiration; and skipping meals or not showering for too long will make you sick and cost you time.

And then, there are times when the game throws in commentaries that break the 4th wall, making you laugh at how silly it is compared to life.

The sense of humor in this game is on point.

Real Rock Music Vibes in Legends of Rock

One of my favorite things about the game is how real it feels. I was pleased to discover that Legends of Rock contains an original Rock soundtrack alongside real Rock music from bands such as Sibiir, Slomosa, Svölk, Yoth Iria, Syndrom, and many more! This adds a level of realism to the game, since it helps you get totally immersed in it, trying your best to fulfill your dream of becoming a true rockstar with fellow rockers.

Legends of Rock bandmates recording the first album
Recording with your band in a studio is so fun; it makes you feel like a real Rock band.

Though, at times, because of that same realness, it gets a little bit boring. You get to a point where you start falling into a daily routine: attend your day job to pay bills, go to the grocery store so you don’t starve, rehearse with your band until you fall asleep. Rinse and repeat.

Some activities take up so much of your time, like rehearsing with your band. By the time you’re getting into the mood, it is already midnight, and you need to head home to rest. Although that’s a part of the game of life, too.

Legends of Rock surprised me in the best way, as it also includes the ups and downs that are present in life when we’re in the thick of working for our dreams. Sometimes we don’t trust the right people, and we end up losing money because of them, or members of our band leave, etc. It is interesting how these setbacks are represented in the game, giving you hope to keep going and not dwell too much on them.

Performing with my band felt so rewarding!

Conclusion: Become a Rockstar!

I had a great time playing Legends of Rock, from listening to its soundtrack while playing mini-games to optimizing my time to build my band and record our music. It’s also a beautiful reminder of what real life feels like when working towards something, and how you are able to build your dreams one day at a time. It certainly gives you the satisfaction of going from performing small gigs here and there to recording your first studio album.

Its simple mechanics and straightforward storyline make it easy to find the rhythm of the game for those who are not as savvy with time management games as I am.

I recommend it especially to rock fans or anyone who has dreamt of having a band of their own!

Final Verdict: I Like It a Lot
