The Premise of Momento
Momento is a cozy room decorator game where the choices we make change the way our character lives out their life. While decorating, we choose which items are important and thus discover how the objects we choose will alter the course of the story.

The Gameplay of Momento
In Momento, we have two modes – Story mode and Creative Mode. Creative mode is basically Sandbox mode, where we can create our own rooms and spaces and decorate however we wish with what items and furniture we’ve unlocked so far in the story.
Story mode, on the other hand, is where we see Momento in action. We start in childhood by choosing toys that reflect a child’s future dreams. In each room, we are given story prompts – glowing locked boxes- and clicking on them will give us some indication as to what to look at in order to unlock those boxes. Once the box is unlocked, clicking on it will give a choice between several objects – art supplies and a telescope, a book or a doll, and so on. Depending on the choice we’ve made, we will have different items to unpack, sort, and arrange. Once we are done with a room, we can click on the right corner of the screen to indicate we are done. So, we have all the time we want to rearrange items, and we decide when to move on, rather than the game deciding.

Once we reach the end, the game automatically sends us back to the start, and, suitably, the level is called rebirth. We get to make different choices this time and see where they take us.
But Momento is more than a decorating game where we put toys in a chest or arrange books on a shelf. We see a lot of postcards, sticky notes, text messages, letters, and all kinds of books and notebooks. We get to see dates and some names and get a glimpse of the life our character is building and leading. It’s a true life, with its joys and tragedies.

Besides all that, Momento is also a gorgeous game, with snappy controls and a beautiful cartoonish visual style in soft colors. The soundtrack is also great, and the main theme will get stuck in your head in the best possible way. The game adds a little challenge – some hidden puzzles in each room, and we can see them all if we click on the puzzle piece icon at the top of the screen. But they are hidden, yet very intuitive, meaning arranging books on a shelf might just turn out to be one of those puzzles. Another thing to note is that the rooms we are arranging are not static models – we can interact with a lot of objects inside: turn on and off lights and candles, go through the books, and of course, pet the cats.
The game offers a variety of choices and combinations, giving us a lot of replayability in Story mode and an even mode in Creative mode. In Creative mode, we have complete freedom – we can even move around the windows.
Momento has the basic audio and video settings. The game has Steam achievements, but no Trading cards yet.

Conclusion
Momento is a game that the fans of Unpacking have been eagerly awaiting. Thankfully, it doesn’t disappoint at all, and it’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for. It is the perfect mix of cozy storytelling, open to wonder and whimsy, and really, perfect for summer.
