Back in May 2023, I played a demo of an intriguing “friend-em-up” adventure game called Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. I really enjoyed the demo, and I’ve been looking forward to the day when the game will be released; that day has arrived.
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is an adventure that blends Greek mythology with heartfelt storytelling, a diverse cast of characters, and breezy gameplay. Developed by Polygon Treehouse, the studio behind the acclaimed Röki, this game brings the same sense of wonder and warmth to a new setting: Ambrosia Island, an idyllic island home to gods in need of a friend.
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island – A Mythical Adventure Full of Heart

In Mythwrecked, the story begins with Alex, a backpacker whose relaxing getaway takes a sudden turn when she’s shipwrecked on the mysterious Ambrosia Island.
Alex encounters the Oracle, a statue that reveals she isn’t the only one on the island. However, not everyone Alex meets will greet her with open arms. The Oracle directs her to The Messenger, who turns out to be the Greek god Hermes. Unfortunately, Hermes has no memory of how he ended up on the island.

Ambrosia Island isn’t just any old island, and it doesn’t just have one god. In fact, it’s the home of gods like Athena, Hermes, and Hades; they have all lost their memories and need Alex’s help to rediscover their true selves.
A Friend-em-up

Mythwrecked describes itself as a “friend-em-up” adventure. While escaping the island is the main goal, building friendships along the way is just as important.
To strengthen your bond with each character, you’ll need to level up your friendship with them. For Hermes, this involves feeding some of the island’s friendly seagulls. Once that’s done, you’ll use the Ambrosidex, a device provided by the Oracle, to track down items Hermes has lost around the island.

The Ambrosidex serves as your inventory tracker, map, and more. Finding and returning Hermes’s belongings not only boosts your friendship level but also encourages him to share more about his memories and knowledge of the island.

Although Alex is eager to find a way off the island, it’s clear she might be here for a while. Fortunately, there’s an abandoned lighthouse that serves as a cosy retreat where she can rest at the end of each day. As Alex explores, she’ll discover items scattered around the island that can be used to personalise her new temporary home.
The game’s mechanics are simple but very rewarding. Armed with the Ambrosidex, Alex explores the island, scanning for mementoes that jog the gods’ memories, feeding the local seagulls and solving puzzles. The puzzles are intuitive and never frustrating, making the game perfect for those players who prefer a relaxed experience. A dynamic day-night cycle adds a touch of realism, with some locations and challenges only accessible at certain times.
Heartwarming Approach to Storytelling

What makes Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island special is its heartwarming approach to storytelling. Conversations are central to uncovering secrets, and as you earn each character’s trust, new dialogue options open up, deepening both the story and your bond with these mythological figures.
Each god is brought to life with charm and wit, offering a fresh, humorous twist on their mythological personas. Helping them isn’t just about solving puzzles; it’s more about forging friendships with the gods, uncovering their backstories, and bringing their fractured family back together. The writing strikes a perfect balance between humour and heart, making even the simplest interactions feel meaningful.
Visuals and Accessibility

Visually, Mythwrecked is stunning with its day and night cycle on both PC and Steam Deck. Turquoise waters, lush greenery, and crumbling temples provide a gorgeous backdrop for exploration; I really like the pastel colours. The island is filled with details, from sunlit beaches to ancient ruins. Every inch of the world feels alive and inviting, encouraging exploration at every turn. The 3D environments are fun to explore, filled with secrets and treasures waiting to be uncovered.

The game also includes a range of accessibility settings that make it approachable for all players, whether you’re a newcomer to the genre or a seasoned adventurer.
Mythwrecked is full of Polygon Treehouse’s trademark humour, and charm shines throughout, particularly in the dialogue. The gods’ interactions with Alex are both funny and touching, offering plenty of laugh-out-loud moments while also delving into themes of friendship, family, and self-discovery.
For fans of Röki, there’s a familiar sense of wonder and whimsy in Mythwrecked, but the game stands strong on its own as a thoughtful, imaginative experience. It’s proof that non-violent games can be every bit as compelling as action-packed adventures.

Conclusion
Polygon Treehouse has delivered another gem, Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, which is a delight from start to finish. It combines a heartfelt narrative, accessible gameplay, and a beautifully crafted world to create a truly memorable adventure. Whether you’re here for the mythology, the humour, or the cosy vibes, you’ll find plenty to love in Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island.
Final Verdict: Two Thumbs up ![]()
