Puzzles for Clef is a 2024 puzzle adventure developed by Weasel Token and released by indie.io.

Premise

In Puzzles for Clef, we play Clef, a bunny who gets a letter from her sister Cres, and undertakes a journey to the island of her ancestors. We solve puzzles on a magical sky island while hunting for a mysterious treasure and exploring each of the island’s regions.

The Gameplay of Puzzles for Clef

In terms of gameplay, Puzzles for Clef is primarily a puzzle game with some elements of a platformer. Since the island is not empty, we have people who live here, and we can also pick up quests. In that sense, it’s more similar to Spiritfarer than, let’s say, the Trine games.

Music is a big part of the game – Clef can play some notes, and many of the puzzles revolve around musical combinations of some kind. We also collect bells throughout the game. The puzzles, whether they contain ciphers, music, or something else, are logical and understandable. The tasks are concise, challenging, and relaxing.

Clef, home, kind of.

And speaking of relaxing, in Puzzles for Clef, we are free to explore. There are no enemies or fighting, no death or danger.

We have a diary where all the letters from Cres are collected. We can see the map, all the little tidbits of lore we’ve collected, and, speaking of, our inventory and collectables.

A Visual Fest

Puzzles for Clef is a delightful game, bursting with vibrant colors and whimsical designs that instantly draw you in. The characters are irresistibly charming, particularly our brave protagonist, Clef, who embodies both spirit and adventure. It’s clear that a tremendous amount of care and creativity went into every aspect of the game’s development. Even the Steam achievements stand out, masterfully designed to resemble artistic stamps, adding a unique and playful touch that enhances the overall experience. Each detail reflects the dedication to crafting an enchanting world players will love exploring.

Some technical bits

Puzzles for Clef has all the basic audio and visual settings. It also has beautiful Steam achievements but no trading cards yet. Some of the players have complained about missing items causing soft blocks—I haven’t experienced any problems, but I am about halfway through the story.

Conclusion

Puzzles for Clef is an ideal rainy-day game—it has rabbits, music, whimsy, a beautiful setting, relaxing puzzles, and no rush or hurry. I think it’s a game meant to be savoured and played slowly, and I love it. I think you might, too.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up
