Astral Throne is a fascinating blend of roguelike gameplay and grid-based combat, reminiscent of games like Fire Emblem. It’s as if the developers thought, “What if we added the high stakes and unpredictability of roguelikes to tactical RPGs?” The result is a compelling mix of strategic gameplay, team management, and tense decision-making. With its free demo currently available on Steam, Astral Throne makes a strong first impression.

Story

The game’s story is set on a once-prosperous island kingdom, now plunged into chaos by a mysterious shooting star. This celestial event has caused a corrupting fog to engulf the land, turning its inhabitants into dangerous foes. You play as two heroes with their own motivations; some aim to save the land, while others seek glory and riches. Regardless of their reasons, your task is clear: explore the island, uncover the truth behind the shooting star, and bring peace to the realm.

The demo begins by allowing you to choose from four unique characters (more in the final release), each with distinct stats, abilities, and weapons. You select one main commander and a secondary sub-commander to accompany you on your run. One of the game’s standout features is how the chosen characters interact throughout the run. Their dialogue changes based on the pairing, adding a layer of depth and replayability. If you enjoy rich storytelling and lore, Astral Throne offers plenty to uncover through multiple playthroughs.

Grid-Based Combat

The main objective of each run is to reach the castle at the centre of the island. However, your time is limited, so you’ll need to balance exploration, combat, and resource collection carefully.

Combat takes place on grid-based maps, where you position your units strategically to gain an advantage. Each mission typically requires you to defeat the enemy’s lead commander to progress. Occasionally, the game mixes things up with objectives like protecting villagers or holding a specific area. Battles are turn-based, with you and the enemy taking turns moving units, attacking, and using abilities. The key to success lies in eliminating enemy units while minimizing your own losses.

If you’ve played Fire Emblem, the combat mechanics will feel familiar. For newcomers, the game includes a solid tutorial that introduces its systems, with an option to revisit it later for a refresher. Units have strengths and weaknesses, which are conveniently displayed on-screen for quick reference during battles. This accessibility ensures that even players new to the genre can get up to speed quickly.

Levelling Up

As you defeat enemies, your units earn experience points. Upon levelling up, you’re presented with three random upgrade options, which may include stat boosts or new abilities. The choices you make can significantly impact your strategy, allowing you to tailor your units to suit your playstyle.

One interesting mechanic is how fallen units are handled. If a character is defeated, their body remains on the battlefield. You have the option to rescue them and return them to your caravan, where they can be revived later. Additionally, certain characters have the ability to recruit enemy soldiers during battles, adding them to your team mid-combat. These mechanics create opportunities for creative strategies and keep battles engaging.

Difficulty

One of the first things you’ll notice about Astral Throne is its difficulty. The demo doesn’t hold back, and even experienced players may find themselves struggling at first. On my initial run, I failed the first mission despite being familiar with similar games.

What sets Astral Throne apart is how it handles failure. When you lose, the game provides a detailed epilogue for each character, explaining how their quest ended in tragedy and how they were lost to history. It’s a bittersweet touch that adds weight to your decisions and encourages you to learn from your mistakes.

The difficulty is further amplified by the game’s time limit. You can’t play too cautiously, as lingering too long on a mission triggers a poisonous cloud that engulfs the battlefield, draining your health and forcing you to push forward. This mechanic keeps the pace brisk and forces players to take risks, which I found exciting. However, casual players may find the challenge daunting.

Graphics and Atmosphere

Visually, Astral Throne has a unique charm. The character models feature a low-poly aesthetic that feels like a throwback to the PS1 era, which I really liked. This nostalgic style is paired with an epic soundtrack that enhances the game’s atmosphere, making every battle feel impactful.

Final Thoughts

Astral Throne delivers a promising blend of roguelike mechanics and grid-based combat. Its challenging gameplay, strategic depth, and engaging storytelling make it a standout experience for fans of tactical RPGs. The demo offers a glimpse into a game that rewards careful planning and punishes reckless decisions, creating a satisfying loop of risk and reward.
