Camper Van: Make It Home Demo Impressions

Camper Van: Make It Home is an adorable little simulation game similar to Unpacking. You get a bunch of objects, and you need to find homes for all those objects in your little camper van.

So many cubbies for all my stuff!

I absolutely adored Unpacking, and I spent a lot of time out on the internet looking for similar titles. It’s how I ended up falling in love with A Little to the Left. One of the many times I’ve been searching for more Unpacking-like games, I came across a Kickstarter for Camper Van. I instantly adored the aesthetic, and I ended up signing up for the Kickstarter that day. I have been waiting with bated breath ever since.

Needless to say, I’m as excited about Camper Van: Make It Home as anyone could possibly be, so keep that in mind as you read through my thought on the Steam Next Fest demo.

The Look and Feel of the Camper Van: Make It Home Demo

Camper Van: Make It Home is the ultimate relaxing game. The demo is just a taste of what we will get when the full game releases, but it really does look and feel absolutely stunning. All the colors are soft and relaxing, the nature sounds in the background make this game extra chill, and you get to organize things how you want it and not how the game wants it, as it was in Unpacking.

Art supplies for days!

You have tons of little cubbies and drawers to hold all your clothing, kitchen supplies, food, soap, and other necessities needed to make a perfect vacation in your adorable van. Sadly, the demo is missing many of the things I was really looking forward to, from being able to choose what my van looks like, choosing my own clothing, and redecorating the walls and cabinets of my own little space. I hope to be able to do these things in the full game.

What the demo did do, however, was show us some stuff that will be coming in the full game. In the demo, there is a scrapbook for you to fill out with different places to visit, which probably means several levels of organizing and decorating. I look forward to whatever this map and scrapbook will bring us in the future.

A Couple of Issues

The demo had a few hiccups, which should be expected in an indie title that is still in the works. If you place the keys down on the table, for example, and you put other objects too close to it, you can no longer pick the keys up.

My van looks SO CUTE.

If you put anything next to the little toilet accidentally (I put a box of straws there, but I didn’t mean to), that object is basically stuck there forever. But overall, the experience felt lovingly made, and it had surprisingly few problems considering how many moving parts it had.

One other issue I had was getting used to the controls. It was a little awkward at first, but I found that changing the camera movement to inverted for both up to down and left to right made a huge difference in how it feels to move around the space. It did take a bit to get the hang of it, but it got easier the more I played.

Final Thoughts

There isn’t a whole lot to see in the demo of Camper Van: Make It Home, but what is there is gorgeous. It’s soothing, beautiful, relaxing, unhurried, and you can basically do whatever you want with your new stuff. It’s a wonderful little demo of a game, and it only has me more excited for the full release. I can’t wait to customize my own camper and have a lot more items to choose from. But the demo is a wonderful proof of concept, and I am blown away by how close to the Kickstarter concept art it ended up being.

Even more cubbies!

Overall, this is a fantastic demo for Camper Van: Make It Home, and all relaxing game fans should be very excited for what comes next. You can find the Steam page for Camper Van: Make It Home here.
