Familiar Findings is a cozy, magical creature-collecting idle game that lives at the bottom of your desktop. You’ll be assisting a witch in summoning various creatures and experimenting with fusion spells to discover new forms and complete your codex of magical familiars.

Cute Desktop Companion

Similar to other idle games, such as Tiny Pasture or Berserk B.I.T.S, Familiar Findings defaults to sitting at the bottom of your screen as a transparent overlay showing the witch and your conjured creatures. To collect creatures, simply flip to the summon page of your grimoire and choose the family you’d like to summon. You’ll have to wait between summons because each instance costs essence, which is a resource that regenerates gradually with time.

You can choose one of the five basic familiars or summon a random one with a higher rarity chance!

The gameplay loop essentially involves your familiars wandering around on your display while gradually generating mana, which you can collect by clicking on the witch. You can also click on your conjured creatures to interact with them. Each species has its own unique animation, from roasting marshmallows with your dragon to watering your flowery hedgehog to help it bloom.

I love watching my little familiars wander the bottom of my desktop.

There are also several customization settings to tailor Familiar Findings to your liking. For example, changing the game display from overlay to windowed can help you keep your creatures better contained. You can also separately adjust the size of the grimoire and your familiars, but I’ve run into a few graphical glitches, like random black bars, from increasing the grimoire scale.

Experimenting With Fusion Spells

Your goal in Familiar Findings is to discover all of the creature species in order to complete your familiar codex. Summoning only provides you with the basic tier 1 summon in each of the families: Fauna, Dragon, Spirit, Flora, and Slime. Fusion spells allow you to combine two familiars of the same tier to form higher-tiered species of the family and even hybrids. Experimenting with fusion requires mana, with costs increasing for higher-tiered fusions. Fortunately, your new familiars also boast increased mana regeneration rates to help you in your quest!

Comprehensive Codex of Creatures

The codex section of your grimoire does a great job of tracking your familiar-collecting progress. Here, you can sort the creatures you’ve discovered by tier or family to track which familiars you’ve still yet to discover. The codex also has a detailed page for each species with basic information, such as family and rarity, and a description written by the witch, as well as discovered color variants for higher-tiered familiars. The fusion results section is especially helpful for keeping track of the fusion combinations you’ve already tried.

Upgrade Your Powers and Cosmetics

Mana is used not only for fusing your familiars but also for crafting upgrades. Upgrades include those that improve your mana (increasing mana regeneration and maximum number of conjured familiars and decreasing fusion costs) and those that improve your summoning (increasing essence regeneration and summon rarity chances). Once you’ve achieved a steady mana income, you can craft different outfits for the witch in addition to various decorations that don’t affect gameplay but add visual interest to your familiars’ habitat.

Conclusion

Overall, I found Familiar Findings to be a charming addition to my idle games collection with an engaging fusion mechanic that kept me eager to experiment and discover new species and color variants.

Final Verdict: I Like it a LotI like it a lot
