The Gameplay of Mosaic of The Pharaohs

In Mosaic of the Pharaohs, we have a giant puzzle inspired by Egyptian mythology. You have to complete a 60,000+ piece grid puzzle by solving a classic minesweeper game. By solving segments of the whole picture, we uncover nearly 100 fascinating facts about Ancient Egypt’s myths, gods, monuments, and explorers.

The numbered clues (0-9) indicate how many light tiles must be placed within 1 square of the clue. We must fill the grid by turning every square, either dark or light. We can navigate around the picture by using WASD on the keyboard or the mouse wheel. The board is divided into hundreds of smaller segments that can be solved independently. Clues only tell us how many light squares are inside a specific segment.

Mosaic of the Pharaohs also has a hint button and a clear errors button, which resets the puzzle from the last correct move. On the screen’s upper side, we are given a countdown to zero until we complete the picture and the percentage of the correctly filled squares.

  1. The Mega Mosaic games are insanely addictive to me. “Just one more region and then I’ll go to bed…” “OK, just ONE more region and then I’ll go to bed…” “No seriously, ONE FINAL REGION and then I’ll DEFINITELY go to bed…” The dopamine hit of revealing a new mosaic piece never fades.

I’m honestly surprised there are no ad-riddled, browser-based clones of these games (yet). It doesn’t seem super hard to code, and much like Minesweeper, it has huge “game you play to waste time at work” potential. I guess I should be grateful, since I would definitely lose entire days to it if I could just open it in a browser tab.

For the time being, it’s the perfect way to occupy your hands and eyes while you listen to podcasts. Many podcasts… in a row…
