Drive around
Over the Hill is a casual adventure game where you drive a 4×4 car over bumpy roads and trails, and even across forests and hills. It’s a game that is more about the journey than the destination. There are actually no fixed goals, just a map with a few roads and some points of interest to discover, alongside some cabins you can fast travel to.

You decide what is important to achieve. As the car has no need to refuel, you could just keep driving all day, without any particular objective in mind. Or you could choose to chase specific spots on the map — where you can find trail challenges, crates and scenic views. You may also want to become a photographer and complete the compendium of wild animals that can be found in the game.
Choose your Style
Although the game can be quite casual, Over the Hill offers a lot of options for car-loving gamers. You can choose between automatic and manual transmission; manual gives you more control over the gears. Additionally, you can switch your 4×4 between high and low range, giving you great adaptability for every type of terrain you encounter.

There are a few tools you can equip on your car, each with different functions to help you in various situations. The most basic one is the winch, which allows you to use trees to help pull the car up in difficult terrain and to winch objects. You can also buy a portable one that can help you when there are no trees around.

Additionally, you have the jack to flip your car back upright, a meteorite radar, a camp tool that allows you to camp and advance time, a cloud-clearing bell to avoid bad weather, a repair kit, and planks to cross gaps and help with rough terrain. There is also an option to upgrade your vehicle with a better engine, suspension, tires and all sorts of mechanical improvements.

You can even customize your car, changing its model, colour, horn sound, adding little details and giving it a unique style. These items can be unlocked as you discover more points of interest and complete challenges. It is pretty rewarding to explore not just for the cosmetics, but also because the landscape is breathtaking.
Also for adventurous souls
If you’re looking for adventure, Over the Hill can also offer that. Your car has durability that gradually wears down as you crash it or drive on super rough terrain. It’s nothing too serious, but it keeps the player alert so they don’t completely destroy it — and you can instantly repair any damage just by going to a cabin.

However, some weather conditions can make your life a lot more difficult. You could be lucky and get sunny weather, but you could also get rain, thunderstorms or even snow. Nighttime can make things a bit more complicated, as it is harder to see even with headlights. You have the option to stay in a cabin or camp to advance time and avoid such problems.

Some challenge trails are genuinely hard to complete, requiring a lot of skill and maybe even an upgraded vehicle to cross. They can take a few attempts, and there is usually no easier path across them: you either have to face them or give up. But you will only lose out on cosmetic items if you decide you are not up for the challenge.
Conclusion
Over the Hill can offer both a relaxing, casual experience and some real challenges on the road. But no matter the case, it is all about the journey, as it should be for a 4×4 game. It offers a variety of resources and mechanics for all kinds of players, along with incredible scenery. The game was definitely built to let players enjoy the places and the driving rather than be an ability test.
The roads are unique and fun to drive; the world is nice to explore, and you can still see some wild animals as you travel. Of course, most roads are optional, as you can always choose to cut through the woods in a straight line toward your next goal, but the game allows you to do as you wish. Over the Hill lets players roam freely in a way few car games can provide, and it does so in an interesting way.
