Paragon Pioneers 2, released on mobile as well as Steam, is an idle simulation game created by solo developer Tobias Arlt, and it’s the second game in the Paragon Pioneers series.

At its heart, Paragon Pioneers 2 is a management game where your role is to colonise and develop as many islands as you can.

Scouts from the Royal Guard have recently discovered many new islands, so you are sent out to settle on an island. Your task is to raise the flag of the Paragons over these islands and establish new settlements to house the empire’s growing population. But you aren’t alone; you have Lord Ricardo Southburgh, who has been assigned to serve you as an advisor on this mission. Ricardo will keep you right by popping up every so often with tasks for you to complete.

Paragon Pioneers 2
Build a settlement and conquer new islands.

To build a settlement, you start with the basics, such as building woodcutters for wood and plank makers for lumber production and building some huts for your pioneers. The pioneers will need to eat, so pig farms are vital, as is the sausage makers’ hut and fishing hut, as well as water wells so they can drink.

From there, it’s up to you to look after your hard-working pioneers by making sure they’ve got everything they need, including luxuries such as fruit trees so they can make wine from the fruit. You can also research more luxuries and new buildings on the tech tree; it’s quite detailed for an idle game.

Furthermore, unlike other games, when a lack of food or luxuries would cause death to your pioneers, in Pioneers of Paragon 2, this doesn’t cause death or revolt. Instead, you lose your population as the pioneers will leave.

Combat

Paragon Pioneers 2
Clear the islands of Orcs.

However, you and your happy little band of pioneers aren’t the only folk on the island, as Orcs and their fortress also occupy it. Defeating these big baddies will open up new possibilities, like scouting for fresh islands that you can explore and expand to.

By sending some troops to the Orc’s fortress, if your troops fight successfully, you can claim the Orc’s land and expand your settlements. However, you don’t have any direct control over the combat other than choosing what troops to fight the orca; once combat begins, you can carry on with other things in Paragon Pioneers 2, and you are notified once combat finishes. Also, on the normal difficulty setting, the Orcs do not attack your settlement. At least they haven’t attacked my settlement so far, as you only attack them to clear their fortress from the island.

Plenty to Build

Paragon Pioneers 2
Growing Settlement

Paragon Pioneers 2 has 300 diverse buildings to construct and more than 130 goods with an intricate production chain to set up. So, there is plenty of gameplay to keep you busy.

As you play Paragon Pioneers 2, has a tutorial which is given to you via text. It’s a relatively easy game to get to grips with; however, some of the game menus could use some tooltips or names, as none of the buildings are named in the menu; adding names would be helpful for the player to recognise them.

Relaxing Gameplay

Complete research

What I like about Paragon Pioneers 2 is that it lets you build and manage the islands at your own pace. It’s a pretty relaxed island management game with no rush or timers. It’s got simple gameplay and clear objectives; it’s easy to dive into.

For players who enjoy idle games, you can set up gathering and exploration, then return to the game whenever you like and find your settlers have been busy at work.

Visuals and Steam Deck Performance

Paragon Pioneers 2
Set sail to different islands.

Paragon Pioneers 2 has a vibrant look with a variety of building designs and islands with different environments, and the music and sound effects all add to the gaming experience.

I played Paragon Pioneers 2 on my laptop, and then I tried it out on the Steam Deck, and for the most part, it ran pretty well on both devices. On the deck, you can use the touch screen to build, and it is playable on the Steam Deck.

Paragon Pioneers 2
It’s a busy settlement.

Conclusion for Paragon Pioneers 2

Paragon Pioneers 2 is an idle simulation ideal for patient players who enjoy making small changes and returning later to see the larger effects.

However, I’m not a particularly patient person, and while I took delight upon returning to Paragon Pioneers 2, seeing that my little pioneers had been busy at work during the time I was absent, I’m not into idle gameplay. I much prefer to play a game and see the effects there and then. But for those players who enjoy idle gameplay, Paragon Pioneers 2 is definitely a game to try either on PC or mobile.

Final Verdict: I Like It  I like it
