Chicory: A Colorful Tale

Chicory LadiesGamers

A painting adventure game about trying to be somebody

Featuring on both Paula and Mina’s Best Games of 2021, Paula rated this masterpiece ‘Two Thumbs Up’:

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a delightful adventure. It has an intriguing story, innovative gameplay mechanics, well-written characters, engaging puzzles, and a heart-warming story. Now that the game has been released on the Nintendo Switch, I think it’s found the perfect home. I highly recommend you give Chicory: A Colorful Tale a try. If I could, I’d give it four thumbs up. I love it!

Immerse yourself in a unique narrative experience, embarking on a vibrant journey that will awaken your senses and evoke warm memories.

Mina enjoyed her holiday in Dordogne

Dordogne is as close to perfect as a game can be. There is a little jank, and a little weirdness in the UI, but the beauty and depth of the game make that absolutely forgivable.

I don’t think I will be playing Dordogne again any time soon; I think I need to recover emotionally from the story. But I do want to try it again from the beginning and see what other hidden wonders might be around the corners of Dordogne.

Embark on a journey with Flynn and his mythical companion Dex as they fight together to save their home Rosantica from the evil in The Scourge.

James took up arms to help Flynn: Son of Crimson:

Flynn: Son of Crimson may just look like another 2D adventure, something that there really is no shortage of in releases this year alone. But this one ranks up easily as one of the greats. Tight combat, a great soundtrack and an adventure that is short but instantly replayable.

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a game that doesn’t waste your time. I don’t remember a moment where I was bored or frustrated despite playing many games like this before. It even gave me Wonder Boy vibes which is always good in my book. Plus it has one of the coolest spirit dogs in gaming. A fantastic way to top off 2021 for me and I hope you too find the time to check it out.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore

GrimGrimoire OnceMore LadiesGamers

Open the Grimoire once more with brand-new features to explore!

Casting a spell, Paula reviewed GrimGrimoire OnceMore

GrimGrimoire OnceMore is a mix of a visual novel broken up by RTS battles. I went into GrimGrimoire OnceMore without knowing whether I would like the game or not! You see, the visual novel’s gameplay style isn’t my thing. However, I fell in love with the game, but it is not a title for everyone. Though if you’re in the mood for a clever strategy game that is fun and features battles and beautiful artwork and scenes, and a good story, then GrimGrimoire OnceMore definitely is recommended.

Growbot

Growbot LadiesGamers

A beautiful point-and-click adventure about a robot saving her home.

Growbot grew on Paula

Growbot is an interesting and enjoyable game, I loved my time with it. With gameplay inspired by adventure classics such as Loom and Machinarium, and beautiful hand-drawn artwork created by a seasoned children’s book illustrator, charming characters and an intriguing narrative.

If point and click games are your go-to genre, this is one that should be in your library.

We’re Better Together

It Takes Two took top spot when James reviewed it

If you have someone else to play with I can not recommend this game enough. Heck this is a game I would go as far as to say it’s worth getting a console or PC for. The game pushes video games forward in the right direction and it’s a darn shame others haven’t taken note of this. A wholesome co-op experience that is guaranteed to entertain.

No DLC, no microtransactions, no exp, no bugs and utter gaming rubbish we so often see in games these days, just a good video game.

It Takes Two is not just one of the best games I’ve played this year. It’s one of the best video game experiences I have ever had, period.

Moonstone Island is a creature-collecting life-sim set in an open world with 100 islands to explore. Make friends, brew potions, collect Spirits, and test your strength in card-based encounters to complete your Alchemy training!

Shining a light on Moonstone Island, Mina concluded:

Moonstone Island is everything I wanted from a little farm simulation that’s also a Pokemon battler that’s also a deck-based system. It is everything I didn’t even know I wanted; the graphics are beautiful, the soundtrack is soothing, the animations are polished, and the artwork is stunning. I love Moonstone Island and think you will love it here too.

The background includes vibrant, abstract elements resembling a town filled with machinery and lights. Published on: LadiesGamers.

Shin chan starts a mysterious daily routine, traveling between two worlds: the Village in Akita and Coal Town.

Yvonne helped uncover the mysteries in Shin chan: Shiro and the Coal Town

Truly, I hadn’t expected to like Shin chan: Shiro and the Coal Town as much as I do. I was never a big fan of the little boy when my daughter wanted to watch the anime many years ago, so I was a bit sceptical. But I have really warmed up to him, even though he is still a strange little boy.

The game is full of details, little adventures and bigger mysteries. Some of the interactions made me smile, and I was never left frustrated or in a rush. I took my time uncovering it all, and it was a grand journey. This is a serious contender for my Game of the Year 2024!

Shin chan: Shiro and the Coal Town is not for gamers who want to be bowled over by fast-paced action or striving for bigger and better goals. Instead, this is a game to curl up with on the couch and see Shin chan’s world with a kind of childlike wonder. If you want to know more about this game, don’t miss our interview with Akira Nagashima, the producer of the game.

We fused card games and roguelikes together to make the best single-player deckbuilder we could. Craft a unique deck, encounter bizarre creatures, discover relics of immense power, and Slay the Spire!

Elena was dealt a great hand when she reviewed Slay the Spire:

Slay the Spire is a fantastic roguelike deck-builder. It offers creative freedom to craft your deck—more player freedom than I’ve experienced in any roguelike game.

Since you can experience the Spire differently with its three characters (in future: four characters), the replay value is high, making it worth more than $25.

I highly recommend Spire to card-game lovers and anyone who can enjoy learning from failure and experimenting with strategies. But I would caution gamers who have a low tolerance for losing again and again.

The Battle of Polytopia

The Battle of Polytopia LadiesGamers

The award-winning strategy game with cute low-poly graphics. Fast-paced 4x gaming at its best.

Paula jumped into the fray, concluding:

The Battle of Polytopia is not too simple, however, the system makes decision-making interesting and meaningful. The Battle of Polytopia would make an excellent starting ground for players who want to get into the 4X strategy before taking on other games in the genre similar to Civilization and such. The game is suitable for all ages and is family-friendly, a great starting ground to teach youngsters the skills of strategy gaming.

Welcome to the Deep Woods…

Paula braved the deep woods to help The Wild at Heart:

The Wild at Heart is a very enjoyable game. The story of Wake and Kirby is interesting and helps to give them a reason to be where they are in the Deep Woods. With well-crafted puzzles, beautiful artwork, and music that is relaxing and you can really tell a lot of imagination and love went into the making of the game as well as the music.

Treehouse Riddle

LadiesGamers Treehouse Riddle

A tale of small memories that unfolds with riddles of inspiration and puzzles of logic

Elena puzzled her way through Treehouse Riddle

You don’t have to be a logic puzzle buff to enjoy this. For a game with such challenging puzzles, Treehouse Riddle does a fantastic job of offering assistance to players who need it. The hint system is great, the presentation is solid, and the overall execution is polished. So even though I didn’t enjoy some puzzles (math riddles just aren’t my cup of tea), I can’t help but give this Two Thumbs Up.

Be Brave, Little Fox

James ventured into TUNIC

Tunic left a very positive impression on me. I haven’t enjoyed an adventure game like this in quite some time. Tunic cleverly drops the player in its world and just lets them discover things for themselves without feeling overbearing or confusing. It’s a feeling I don’t think I have felt since the good old retro days. Most of all I left most sessions with a smile whether I made progress or not. If that sounds good to you, then I strongly suggest checking it out.

Wayward Strand

LadiesGamers Wayward Strand

Wayward Strand is a heartfelt interactive story, told in a unique and curious way. Play as Casey Beaumaris – intrepid teenage journalist – as she visits an airborne hospital for the first time.

Wayward Strand found its way into Elena’s Best Games of 2022:

This unique work of interactive fiction is realistic, relevant, and wholesome. Amazing voice actors and great writing have made the characters so real and got me to care about them.

Wayward Strand is a game about being there for people. Sometimes that involves being still and doing (seemingly) nothing. These are abilities I feel I’m losing in the age of smartphones. It can be hard to sit with someone in silence, especially when they’re suffering. But this game has given me a little nudge, a little practice, towards being present.
