Poly Puzzle Review (Nintendo Switch)

Poly Puzzle looks like a simplistic game, but as they say looks can be deceiving. The same can be sometimes be said for Poly Puzzle. There is no story to this game as it’s a series of puzzles with the simple premise of completing the puzzle to earn three stars to unlock the next set of puzzles.

Polygon Shapes

Every puzzle is a polygon art shape which appears on the screen in a shattered state. It’s up to you to rotate the shape around to the correct angle at which the picture is completed. If you are lucky and get it right first time, you earn three star’s. However, the longer it takes to complete the picture the less stars you receive. If you need a little help to solve the puzzle you will finish it with one star.

There are over 250 puzzles to solve in Poly Puzzle and it’s certainly enough to keep any keen puzzler happily puzzling for a while. Groups of twelve puzzles are unlocked all at once using the stars you collect. Getting three stars on each puzzle is important since they are needed to advance through the puzzles.

Once you open a group of twelve puzzles you are free to solve them in what ever order you prefer. Being free to choose which of twelve puzzles to play is a great idea and stops the frustration setting in if you get stuck on one puzzle: you can just try another one. There is no hint system as such but what there is works just as well as any hint. Once you drop to one star on a puzzle a help option appears at the bottom of the screen. Press A and the help feature will realign the puzzle to a position where it’s easier to complete.

All Kinds Of Everything

The puzzle picture’s are all unique and cover a lot of subjects. From fruit, fauna, animals, food and objects such as a space rocket and a car. There is a good variety of subjects and since you never know what the shapes are gong to turn into until you finish them, there is a little element of surprise included. Other times you will have a good idea of what the picture will turn out to be as you rotate the shattered shapes, but only if you rotate it the correct way.

This is where the difficulty comes into Poly Puzzle, especially as you progress in the game. As you start to rotate the shattered shapes, then if you happen to turn them the wrong way they won’t click in to place as easily and just remain a bunch of nicely coloured shapes. A little bit of guess work is involved in deciding which way to turn the pieces and in guessing what the end picture will reveal.

Black or White

You can change the colour of the background of the puzzles from black to white at a press of the X button. I preferred the background to be black as the white seemed to be very stark and too bright for my old eyes. It’s unusual to find this option in a game and it’s nice the developers added it to let the player decide on bright white or the darker black.

Poly Puzzle is easily controlled by the Joy-con’s or the touchscreen and both work well. The game also runs smoothly without any slow down or glitches. The graphics are crisp and clear with the brightly coloured polygon shapes, I do like the clean and clutter free look of this game.

The music is a very chilled out, relaxing track until you realise it’s on a loop. After hearing the music repeat quite a few times I turned the volume down.

Conclusion

Poly Puzzle is a game with a simple look, with puzzles that offer enough challenge to keep you playing but without that feeling of frustration that some games can give you. I’ve been picking it up and playing it in between other more complex games as it’s easy to jump in and out of. Very relaxing to play.

For the few Pounds, Euros or Dollars depending on where you live, Poly Puzzle is absolutely worth a place on your Nintendo Switch.
