YvoCaro Plays: counting playing time and can I get a Culture Victory?

Time to sit down for another YvoCaro Plays. As always, these blurbs are mostly about the video games I’m currently playing. Unedited thoughts that spring up in my mind, mostly game related. And sometimes a random train of thoughts starting with the game and ending somewhere completely different.

It’s only fair to warn you that spoilers might sometimes be included. If you like these bits of gaming thoughts you can find the previous ones here.

Insight in game time

Even though I didn’t play a lot on my Switch this week, I did play some more Civilisation VI. My Switch tells me I played it 30 hours or more, but I do think that’s not very accurate. Which reminds me, do you, like me, want to know how much hours you spent in a game? Somehow it feels very satisfying to know how much of my precious spare time was put into a game. And it’s a testament too, about how much I like a game is.

So strange how that works on the Switch. I see games that have “played for 1 hour or more”. Games that I’m pretty sure I spent more time in. If there’s a thing that annoys me about Nintendo’s console, it is that I don’t see gamings stats anymore. Loved that feature on the 3DS. I’m trying to solve that by using an app on my iPhone: Nintendo Switch Parental Control.

Yep, I know it’s for another purpose: to make sure your kids don’t download things on their Switch they shouldn’t. And maybe to keep an eye on how much time they play. You can even notify your kid when play time is almost up.

But for me, it serves another purpose: I can keep a real count on my play time! Granted, I have to add them myself looking at daily playtime, but it still works!

Where is my Culture Win?

As I mentioned, the only thing I played, aside of spending time in Pocket Camp, was Civilization VI. I took ChamZen’ advice and went for a small world with only two cultures. I’m sharing the map with Victoria of England while I’m Kongo. And I’ve put all my efforts into trying to get a culture win! I was doing well too:

But now, with only a 100 moves left, she’s turned the tables on me. Somehow she has forged on ahead of me. But I’ll tell you, I’ll keep on building world wonders, and pretty soon the tourists will flock to my cities…I hope!

So, what are you playing at the moment? I’d love to know!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I’m playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf at the moment. I also like seeing the amount of time I played and other stats! I just did that a few minutes ago before seeing this post actually. I played ACNL for about 40 minutes today. My total time has been 105 hours, which isn’t much because I’ve had the game for years but I just recently in the past several months have been getting back into gaming a lot 🙂

    1. Must be because I always love seeing graphics and statistics, no matter the topic. Do you like that too?
So you were away from gaming for quite some time? New Leaf is a good game to get right back into it, in that comfortable world!

      1. Yeah, statistics are fun to see 🙂

I had stopped playing much of anything for maybe 5 or 6 years, not intentionally, I just had some stuff going on in my life. But I’m back into it and am overwhelmed at the amount of games I want to play haha

ACNL is great, so relaxing to play and so many things to do. I still haven’t finished paying off my home loan on it but I’ll get there someday!

  2. I’m still addicted to Civilization 6!
In my previous game I begun playing for a cultural victory, but halfway through decided a science victory would be fun to try out instead.
But before I could finish all the science victory requirements, I won a cultural victory. Even though I gave away the works of art I stole with my spies to prevent it!
Now I’m playing as America/ Teddy Roosevelt and I’m planning a cultural victory with my Film Studio’s (once I can build them)
I’m not really noticing the benefits of the ‘Founding Fathers’, but I think that’s because I’m not playing it for that long yet.
I like playing with 8 civilizations (although I haven’t tried out a 2 player games yet).
So much to discover and try out!
I like going for the Cultural and Science victory’s the most. I don’t like fighting and a religious victory, but I don’t mind defending myself against both.
And having a religion of your own is really powerful, regardless of how you want to play/ win.

  3. I was thinking, maybe it’s harder to get a cultural victory with only 2 players.
In your game Yvonne, you have to have more tourists from England than England has domestic tourists.
If you play with say 8 civilizations, you still have to have more tourists from outside than all the other civilizations have domestic ones, but you can gather the tourists from 7 other civilizations instead of just the 1.
    Does that make sense?

    1. It makes a lot of sense, Ronja! But I’m happy to say that in turn 470 or so, I had my cultural win! Boy, that felt good!
You are really getting to be very knowledgeable about CIV very quickly, aren’t you! It’s a wonderful game and really worth the money, right?

      1. Congratulations!!
My next game I’m gonna try out the 2 player game to!
I’m starting to get the hang of it, but I’m still playing at settler difficulty and I’m sure I barely know half there is to know.
But I love playing at my own pace, having the time to discover everything and try things out.
You really get your money’s worth on this one indeed! It’s huge, and it’s definitely gonna be a keeper for me.
        Lovely wonderful game!
