YvoCaro Plays: taking a Breath of the Wild together

Time to sit down for another YvoCaro Plays. As always, these blurbs are mostly about the video games I’m currently playing. Unedited thoughts that spring up in my mind, mostly game related. And sometimes a random train of thoughts starting with the game and ending somewhere completely different.

It’s only fair to warn you that spoilers might sometimes be included. If you like these bits of gaming thoughts you can find the previous ones here

Going from one Switch to two

Do I spoil my only child? The answer is yes, I guess I do; if it means we can share in my favourite hobby then I’m all too keen.

You see, my daughter isn’t made of the same gamer material as I am. She dabbles a bit in the LEGO games. Has several Pokémon games, none have been played for very long. The only games she thoroughly enjoys are the Sims on PC and Animal Crossing on the 3DS. That’s it. I can safely say I’m more addicted to playing games than she is.

But the announcement that Animal Crossing was coming to Switch had us equally exited. That’s the one game that will get here into a gaming spree again, or so I thought. There’s only one problem: I have one Switch that is with me day and night. The thought of lending it to anyone….nope, couldn’t bear it.

So what does a gaming mom do? She promises to buy her her own Switch just as soon as Animal Crossing hits the stores. (I know, very irresponsible. Wait for it, it gets worse…)

Wait, you are going to buy which game?

As you might remember from an earlier YvoCaro Plays, my daughter is currently living in London. She is doing an internship there in media design, and I’m glad everything is going well. We talk every night, and we couldn’t help but notice that her evenings and weekends are quiet affairs. Which gave me this brilliant idea: why not give her the Switch now!

This past weekend we spent with her in London, just catching up and having a good time. I had the new Switch with me, installed and with two games I’m currently not playing anyway. Of course, she was overjoyed, just as I had planned. She surprised me though. When I asked if there were any other games in the eShop she would like to try, she said: ” Oh I know, I would really like to play Zelda Breath of the Wild!”

Switch, Zelda, ladiesgamers.com

I hadn’t seen that coming! Maybe my writings on here detailing how this game is one of the best games I’ve ever played have helped. She knows I’m not a fervent Zelda player. But she also knows that the open world concept and the exploration will give her hours of fun, just like it does for me. And what’s more, when she bought the game, she made short work of the first challenges in no time.

As often is the case for me, I can’t resist playing a game with friends. Even if there’s no online play. Just hearing the familiar jingles and music as she dove into Hyrule had me straight back into my own game. I have finished with all the divine beasts, have the Master Sword and I have 54 dungeons done. But I have yet to muster the courage to face Gannon. For now, there are still so many things to do in the game that I can just keep on exploring!

How do you go about sharing your Switch?

So that’s it for this weeks’ YvoCaro Plays. I do wonder though: am I the only one that has the luxury problem that the Nintendo Switch is such a great system for handheld gaming? It has taken over all of my gaming hours, and I take it anywhere, so sharing with others is a problem.

My solution was a costly one, and I know not a solution that works for everyone. So I was wondering, is it a problem in your household too? How do you deal with that?

  1. It’s always nice when you can share and enjoy your hobby with others. As you know, Ruth has been enjoying the Switch lately, and I’m thrilled that Caroline wants to play Breath of the Wild. In our house, I simply have to share, but I’m thankful for the itv player because Ruth has numerous episodes of Dancing on Ice to watch. That means more evening Switch time for me.
