13Z: A New Action Roguelike Enters the Realm

13Z (short for 13th Zodiac) is an exciting new entry in the action-adventure genre featuring rogue-lite elements. Drawing clear inspiration from popular titles like Risk of Rain 2, Devil May Cry, and Hades, 13Z sets itself apart with a distinctive Eastern-inspired graphical design and a highly satisfying hack-and-slash combat system. I had the privilege of playing an early build of the game, and I’m eager to share my thoughts on this promising title.

Become the 13th Zodiac

In 13Z, you play as Lyra, a fox spirit with incredible swordsmanship, embarking on a quest to ascend to the rank of the 13th Zodiac, a revered celestial position. To earn this honour, Lyra must complete a series of trials, battling fierce demons and Zodiac guardians. This premise is ideal for a rogue-lite, as the trials are unforgiving. Despite Lyra’s impressive combat skills, defeat will be a frequent occurrence, sending you back to the hub world to reflect, regroup, and use newly earned upgrades as motivation to reattempt the trials.

The Spirit Realm

One of the standout features of 13Z is its beautiful and tranquil graphical presentation. There’s a serene, almost Zen-like atmosphere that immediately struck me when diving into a run. The game’s levels are lush with vibrant greenery, ruined stone structures cloaked in moss, and snow-capped mountains providing a stunning backdrop beneath bright blue skies. Considering this is a fast-paced hack-and-slash game, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself feeling like I was exploring an ethereal paradise akin to the fields of Elysium rather than tackling a brutal series of challenges.

At times, I found myself pausing just to take in the scenery and appreciate the calming atmosphere and soothing soundtrack. The character models also contribute to this ambience. Lyra, the fox protagonist, is designed with a soft, inviting look, radiating confidence and readiness for the trials ahead. Instead of appearing distressed or burdened by the daunting tasks, she wears a calm smile, which I found refreshing and welcoming.

Hack and Slash Mechanics

The core of 13Z’s gameplay is its hack-and-slash combat, which feels intuitive and familiar to fans of the genre. After a brief but effective tutorial, you’re introduced to a combat system that is easy to pick up but challenging to master. Lyra has access to both standard and heavy attacks, as well as a special move that can be triggered once a cooldown timer resets. Additionally, you can hold down the attack button to release a ranged sword strike, offering flexibility for both close-quarters and ranged combat styles.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the combat is the parry-like system. By dodging at just the right moment, you can open up opportunities to deliver extra damage to enemies. As someone who typically struggles with parry mechanics in other games, I found 13Z’s system surprisingly accessible and satisfying.

The game’s enemies present a reasonable challenge in the early stages, with a mix of close-combat demons and ranged attackers. However, the game’s rogue-lite design, with procedurally generated levels, ensures that no two runs feel the same. Each trial requires quick adaptation to new enemy combinations and environmental challenges, keeping the gameplay exciting and dynamic.

The Roguelite Loop

Like many roguelites, the goal in 13Z is to clear areas of enemies before facing off against the major demon bosses. After each area, you’re rewarded with upgrade options that enhance your abilities. These upgrades can range from adding elemental effects to your attacks, increasing damage, or earning in-game currencies like coins and jade. Jade, in particular, is used to unlock more features and options in the main hub world.

There’s also an occasional vendor where you can spend your accumulated coins on even more upgrades, giving each run a sense of progression. After finishing an area, you usually get to choose the type of reward you’d like to pursue in the next section, offering some strategic control over your runs. It’s a tried-and-true roguelite formula, but 13Z implements it with polish and style.

Developer Feedback and Future Features

One feature I really appreciated in this early build is the inclusion of a quick feedback mechanism after each failed run. The developers ask players a single multiple-choice question about their experience. This small but thoughtful feature demonstrates the team’s commitment to player feedback and improving the game throughout its development.

While the version I played is still in its early stages, it’s clear there are big plans for the final product. The full release of 13Z promises additional characters and a cooperative mode, which will be especially appealing to those who enjoy playing with friends or loved ones. The game will also feature lore based on Chinese mythology, offering players a deeper narrative connection to the Zodiac Guardians they encounter.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by my time with 13Z. As someone who has spent an unhealthy amount of time in the rogue-lite and hack-and-slash genres, I feel that this game is a refreshing and unique addition to the space. The combination of engaging combat, beautiful world design, and thoughtful rogue-lite mechanics makes for a compelling experience. If I were to make any critique at this point, the enemies can feel a bit meaty to defeat, so some difficulty balancing may be needed.

Though no official release date has been announced, 13Z is currently available for a global playtest, giving players a chance to experience the game in its early stages. If nothing else, I highly recommend Wishlisting the game; it’s a simple way to support the developers and stay updated on its progress. With its potential to stand out in a crowded genre, 13Z is certainly a title to keep an eye on.
