2020 is almost at an end…a year that most of us are very happy to say goodbye to. Still, there was some good gaming to be done. Let’s see which games made 2020 a good gaming year for our writers!
Paula’s Top Games 2020
Didn’t 2020 take a strange turn, like myself I am sure the year changed for a lot of people. I’ve spent most of the year shielding. If nothing else it has given me more time to play games, these games which aren’t in any particular order are my picks for my best games of 2020!
The Last Campfire
Genre: Indie, Adventure | Platformer | Puzzle
This is a cute adventure game about Ember, a little hooded creature who is lost. Ember has to find all the other lost embers and return them to the last campfire. It’s got some puzzles to work out and is just a lovely game to play.
The puzzles are incorporated into the environment in the game, there not to hard just difficult enough to get the brain working. It’s a gorgeous game to look at and I reviewed the game back in September and give it our highest score of two thumbs up.
Spiritfarer
Genre: Indie | Adventure | Simulation
Spiritfarer looks at death and the departing, exploring the emotions around death, crossed with simulation management and a little adventuring. It may sound very depressing as it deals with death but it’s not. It’s quite an uplifting game and it’s certainly a beautiful looking game too.
Stella and her cat Daffodil sail the seas on a hand-me-down boat picking up lost spirits in the shape of anthropomorphic animals. Along the way, you’ll progress each spirit’s strand of quests, they’ll open up to you about their life, their worries, their regrets and find peace. And eventually, you will see them off on their final journey through the Everdoor. This is another one I reviewed and you can find my thoughts on Spiritfarer here.
Hyrule warriors Age of Calamity
Genre: Adventure | Action | Fighting
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity takes place 100 years before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hyrule Warriors is a combination of the beat-’em-up combat of Dynasty Warriors mixed with the action-adventure elements from Breath of the Wild.
Being a Zelda fan I couldn’t miss this one when it was released and I’m glad I downloaded it. It’s a perfect game to have to tide us over until BOTW2 makes its appearance. I’ve spent many hours battling Moblins and Bokoblins, you can read my thoughts on the game in my review. And you will find our Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity guide here!
Immortals Fenyx Rising
Genre: Action | Adventure
Immortals: Fenyx Rising tells the story of Fenyx, her brother Ligeryon, and their fellow Greeks who have been shipwrecked on the Golden Isle. It’s full of humour, lots of exploring and Greek gods.
It’s a game you can take your time with and do what you want as and when you feel like it. Either by following story quests or by exploring the large map, you’re sure to have a lot of fun with this one. I’ve been playing Immortals Fenyx Rising since it came out and I’ve been taking my time and throughly enjoying the story of the Gods and the humour in the game. I’ve also reviewed Immortals Fenyx Rising and I liked it so much I wrote a beginners guide as well.
Windbound
Genre: Adventure | Action | Survival
Shipwrecked alone on an uncharted island, explore, adapt and navigate the land and perilous seas to stay alive. As Kara, you are a warrior, caught at sea in a fierce storm, adrift from your tribe.
With no boat, no food or tools, just the will and skill to survive, uncover this beautiful island’s rich resources. Craft tools and weapons to hunt and defend yourself against nature itself. Windbound was enjoyable to play.
As a player it gave me the freedom to explore the world Kara found herself in and it’s a lovely world with a good story. I liked it so much that after reviewing the game I wrote a guide of hints and tips for Windbound.
Puddle Knights
Genre: Puzzle | Strategy
Puddle Knights is a puzzle game about wits, chivalry and mud. In the game, valiant knights of varying cape lengths assist Ladies and Bishops across mud formations that threaten to dirty their precious hems.
It’s a tricky game in places but isn’t that what we all look for in a puzzle game. This is a very entertaining puzzle game and it made me smile while I was playing it as it appealed to my sense of humour. Difficult enough to provide a good challenge, but not difficult enough to make it frustrating, the best kind of puzzle game! My review for Puzzle Knights can be found here!
Röki
Genre: Indie | Adventure | Platformer | Puzzle
In Röki you join Tove on a fantastical journey to save her family. A journey that takes her deep into a hidden and long forgotten world of lost folklore filled with strange locations and even stranger creatures.
Röki immediately managed to catch my interest the very first moment I saw screenshots of it when it was revealed three years ago. Röki is a lovely game that revolves around rather dark fairy tales. I loved the overall presentation of the game. and exploring the world of Röki was a delight to play for me. This is another one I reviewed and loved.
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Genre: Simulation
Animal Crossing New Horizons, the AC game we had been waiting years on being released, finally made its way to the Switch in March. Perfect timing on the release of the game as most of the world went into hibernation.
I’ve spent many many hours on my island getaway. Crafted everything from tools to home comforts. I’ve hunted down insects late at night, and decorated my island paradise throughout the day. Visited with friends on their islands to enjoy sunsets on the beach while fishing in the ocean. It’s let me run free when I couldn’t go out at all.
It’s been my go to game when the real world is a disappointment or if I want to play without thinking, then it’s ACNH. Ash reviewed Animal Crossing New Horizons and you can read her review here. You can also find all off LadiesGamers ACNH various guides here.
