Ever wonder what it takes to make a video game? Do you think making video games would be a fun job?
Well, it’s far from easy, according to game journalist Jason Schreier, who interviewed over 100 people in the game industry to learn about challenges and problems they face while creating the games we love.
Schreier put their tales together in his 2016 book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made, which I read recently. I picked up the book because I wanted to hear behind-the-scenes stories about acclaimed games like Stardew Valley, Uncharted 4, and The Witcher 3.
Though most of the 10 games featured in this book aren’t handheld games, I think gamers here would still enjoy the book since handheld and non-handheld games share many challenges in common, in terms of game development.
In particular, fans of Stardew Valley might enjoy reading about how the game was created by a one-man army, a dude named Eric Barone who relied on his girlfriend’s financial support in the years he spent producing Stardew Valley.
If you’re intrigued, here’s a blog link to my (lengthy) book review of Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, including a preview of each chapter.
