A Good Use for Clutter

Clutter, as a rule, is not generally a good thing. Mountains of mess can affect our mental health as well as be a health hazard. However, one good use for clutter is in the form of Clutter Puzzle Magazine Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition.

I’m not familiar with the Clutter series of games. However, Paula reviewed one of the previous Clutter games. In fact, this is the first one I have played, so I can’t make any comparisons to preview iterations. This review will be purely on this edition alone.

The first thing that struck me after browsing the settings and various parts of the game was the “quest book.” In addition to the main quest (which features all types of puzzles within it), some quests are more puzzle-specific. For example, you can do a quest which only consists of spotting the difference or mahjong. However, don’t be fooled by the term quest. There aren’t any achievements for completing these quests. The achievement itself is satisfaction and a job well done.

Clutter Puzzle Magazine, Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition, is Unassuming

One thing I have found with Clutter Puzzle Magazine Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition is that the game doesn’t assume that you have played previous editions of the game and doesn’t make assumptions that you know how to play all of the puzzles or what each icon means.

Help boxes are available every step of the way, assisting you in deciphering the iconography and how each puzzle type can be solved. As someone new to the Clutter series of games, this tool was invaluable!

Spot the differences

So…Many…Puzzles

I love a game that has a lot to offer, and Clutter Puzzle Magazine Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition does not disappoint. The game boasts over 1400 puzzles, with each being replayable. There’s something here for everyone. Like, spot the difference? You’re covered. Have a penchant for mahjong? Check. Slider puzzles? Yep. Deciphering words and quotes? Look no further.

There is just so much packed within this gem of a game. It can be a little overwhelming knowing where to begin, so I’d recommend starting with the main quest, which contains all the puzzle types, and then you can see what kind of puzzles you like and which you’d rather give a miss.

Accessibility and Settings

One thing that pleasantly surprised me was how accessible Clutter Puzzle Magazine Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition is. Various elements of the gameplay can be toggled on or off. If you don’t like having a time limit, the timer can be turned off. If you like to use hints when you get frustrated, unlimited hints can be turned on. As a standard, when using a hint, the game will merely point you to where the next available item that you need, but in the settings, you can change it so that the game will remove the item as soon as you use a hint.

You can turn to colourise on or off, depending on your colour blindness or personal preference. If you don’t like items jumping about, you can turn chaos mode off. The game can be tailored to your wants and needs, and it’s a very refreshing experience.

While on the subject of accessibility, I did find that the layout took a bit of getting used to. I initially found it cluttered (intentional?), and orange is not my favourite colour, but I soon grew accustomed to it.

Conclusion

Clutter Puzzle Magazine, Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition, is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the number of puzzles that are jampacked into this gem of a game. The ability to tailor various aspects of gameplay is also a welcome addition. You can find Clutter Puzzle Magazine Vol. 16 No. 2 Collector’s Edition on Steam here.

Final Verdict: Two Thumbs Up: Two thumbs up
