Donkey Kong Country Returns HD: A Modern Swing at a Classic Adventure
There’s nothing quite like seeing an old favourite get a new lease on life. Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Nintendo Switch is a visually enhanced version of the Wii classic, swapping the waggle controls for more traditional buttons and throwing in a new “Modern” difficulty to make things a bit friendlier. The result? A nostalgic yet refreshed journey through Donkey Kong Island that’s as charming and challenging as ever. Whether you’re a fan of the original or someone diving in for the first time, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is worth beating your chest over.
A Familiar Jungle Beat
The story is simple yet effective. The dastardly Tiki Tak Tribe has hypnotized the island’s animals and stolen Donkey Kong’s precious banana hoard. Naturally, this doesn’t sit well with our favourite tie-wearing ape. Joined by his trusty sidekick, Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong sets out to reclaim his stash, smashing through jungles, mines, beaches, and volcanoes in the process.
The narrative takes a backseat to the platforming action, but that’s not a bad thing. This game is all about precision jumps, satisfying barrel-blasting sequences, and uncovering hidden secrets, which will please platforming fans.

Platforming Perfection
At its core, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD retains the tight platforming mechanics of the original. You’ll run, jump, pound, and roll your way through meticulously designed levels that are equal parts rewarding and punishing. The game is packed with clever environmental hazards, dynamic stages (like crumbling ruins or rising lava), and the series’ signature sense of rhythm.
The updated controls are a huge improvement. On the Wii, actions like rolling or ground-pounding required waggle controls, which felt imprecise at times. The Switch version lets you use traditional button inputs, making gameplay smoother and more responsive. Trust me; you’ll appreciate the added precision during those hair-raising moments when you’re dodging collapsing platforms or hopping between rocket barrels. However, if you really miss the waggle, you can still switch this on in the options.
Co-op once again returns to the game locally, where each player controls a Kong. A feature I’ve always liked in co-op is Diddy’s ability to leap on Donkey’s back and take the lead on tricky platform sections. This feature may really appeal to players playing with younglings or more casual players who need a helping hand.

A Helping Hand
For those who found the original game a bit too tough, the new “Modern” difficulty mode is a welcome addition. It gives players an extra heart, boosting Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong’s health from two to three hearts each. It doesn’t make the game a cakewalk; you’ll still need to master tricky jumps and survive brutal boss fights, but it does soften the blow of repeated failures. For purists, the “Classic” difficulty remains, so no judgment if you prefer to keep things old school.
Beauty in the Details
Visually, the game looks fantastic on the Switch. The HD upgrade breathes new life into the already-gorgeous environments, making the vibrant colours pop and the detailed backgrounds stand out even more. From lush jungles to shimmering underwater caves, the game’s world feels alive and brimming with personality.
The characters also benefit from the graphical overhaul, with smooth animations and expressive designs. Watching Donkey Kong pound his chest in victory or Diddy zooming around on his jetpack never gets old.
The soundtrack is another highlight, blending remixed versions of classic Donkey Kong Country tunes with original compositions. From the iconic jungle theme to the frantic mine-cart melodies, the music complements the game’s energy.

Challenges and Collectibles
As with any Donkey Kong game, this one is loaded with collectables and secrets. Each level hides puzzle pieces, K-O-N-G letters, and bonus rooms, giving completionists plenty to sink their teeth into. Unlocking everything takes skill, patience, and a sharp eye. But if you do need a hand, you can purchase some power-ups from Cranky Kong between levels.
The game’s difficulty curve can be steep, especially in later stages, but it rarely feels unfair. Every death is a lesson, and every hard-won victory feels immensely satisfying. That said, some levels, particularly the famous mine carts and rocket barrels, might test your patience.
A Few Bananas Short of Perfection
While Donkey Kong Country Returns HD improves on the original in many ways, it’s not without its minor flaws. The precision-based platforming can be unforgiving at times, even with the new Modern mode. And while the HD visuals are impressive, they’re not a complete overhaul; you’re still playing a game originally designed for the Wii.

Conclusion: A Swinging Success
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a masterclass in platforming design that feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch. The updated controls, improved visuals, and new difficulty options make this the definitive way to experience the game. However, it still offers more or less the same game experience on Wii and 3DS, so some players may not see the need to return. But if you are new and love your platformers, this still comes recommended.
Yes, it’s challenging, and yes, it may cause a few controller-clenching moments, but that’s part of its charm. Few games manage to balance frustration and fun as effectively as this one. So grab your bananas, ready your barrels, and swing into action; Donkey Kong is back and better than ever, even if it is for the third time.
Final Verdict: I Like it a Lot
