Flora & Fang – A Quirky, Cosy Arcade Treat
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Dracula took a vacation and left his vampire kids in charge of a pumpkin patch, Flora & Fang: Guardians of the vampire garden answers that burning question, and it does so with charm, challenge, and a whole lot of bug spray. This delightful little arcade romp feels like a love letter to old-school games like Donkey Kong 3 and Bubble Bobble, and it brings a strong co-op flavour that’s great for couples, friends, or older kids.
Vampires with Green Thumbs
The premise is simple and silly in the best way: Dracula’s off on holiday, and it’s up to his children, Flora & Fang, to protect the family’s prized pumpkins from a relentless swarm of insects. Forget garlic and crosses; the real weapons here are bug spray and clever traps. There’s no deep story, but the bizarre premise is more than enough to give the gameplay context, and it’s just oddball enough to hook you right away.

Protect the Patch
Each level challenges you to defend all the pumpkins from waves of greedy bugs looking to either devour or steal them. You’ll use your bug spray to stun enemies, three sprays and they go dizzy, leaving you a small window to jump into them and knock them out for good. It’s fast, reactive gameplay with a solid rhythm: spray, dodge, stomp. Bugs you defeat drop coins, but be quick, the remaining insects might steal those too.
Level design is single-screen and arcade-tight, making it easy to jump in, play a few stages, and hop out. Performance is ranked, with a rating, score, and star awarded if all pumpkins survive. And thankfully, progress saves after every level, a blessing for short play sessions and a smart improvement over other arcade-style games with full resets on failure.
Study the Bugs
Insects come in all forms, from flying nuisances to crawling worms and mosquitoes. Every bug type has its own behaviour pattern, so learning their movement and attack styles becomes key to mastering each level. It’s not just the enemies that get tricky either, some stages add environmental hazards and tighter layouts to test your reflexes.
There are also boss battles that deliver a nice bump in spectacle and strategy. Each boss has distinct mechanics and offers a fun break from the standard wave defence. If you collect letters to spell “BONUS” scattered around each stage via floating balloons, you’ll unlock bonus levels, which range from simple platforming mini-games to matching card challenges for extra coins.

Upgrade Time
Those coins serve a purpose. Between levels eventually you’ll meet a vendor who sells upgrades and items like traps, which add a light tower defence twist to the gameplay. Early on, the difficulty curve is a bit steep in single-player, but as you unlock more gear and figure out the rhythm, it becomes much more manageable. Replaying earlier stages with new upgrades is fun and rewarding, and it makes progress feel meaningful.
In co-op mode, the game really shines. You and a partner can coordinate defences, share laughs, and, more likely than not, scramble around in chaotic bug-battling madness. It’s an ideal pick for couch co-op, and the experience is vastly more enjoyable with two players.
Pixel-Spooky Style
Flora & Fang: Guardians of the vampire garden leans into a Halloween theme with its pixel-perfect presentation. The sprites are clean, cute, and full of character. From eerie castle backdrops to dusky gardens, the environments are varied and playful. It’s spooky but never scary, the kind of “haunted” that feels family-friendly and cosy. The soundtrack adds to the charm with an upbeat, bouncy tone that perfectly matches the game’s energetic pace.

Conclusion – A Pumpkin Patch Worth Protecting
Flora & Fang: Guardians of the vampire garden is a sweet little arcade gem that delivers on its promise of fast-paced fun and quirky charm. Whether solo or with a co-op partner, it’s an enjoyable and surprisingly deep experience for the genre. It may not look like much at first glance, but stick with it and you’ll uncover an addictive loop full of cute chaos, clever mechanics, and lots of bug-squashing goodness.
Final Verdict: I like it a lot
