Well, it finally happened: Nintendo launched the Switch 2. And while the reveal might not have come with quite the same quirky bang as the original Switch, I find myself more excited than ever. This new system, which still embraces that hybrid handheld-TV model, feels like it was made for players like me, gamers who are navigating a busy life but still want to make space for adventure, discovery, and sometimes a bit of nostalgia.

Why I’m Excited for the Switch 2: Personal Reflections, Hopes, and a Little Bit of Gardening

Unlike previous console generations, I haven’t jumped on the latest Xbox or PlayStation. That’s a big change for me, as I usually try to experience all sides of gaming. But lately, those systems feel like they’re moving in a direction that doesn’t really match my current life or interests. I’ve been mostly sticking to PC and Nintendo, and honestly? That feels like a good place to be.

So, for this Gaming Tales, I wanted to take a moment to reflect, not just on what the Switch 2 might bring, but why it feels so exciting on a personal level. These are the little (and big) things I’m looking forward to.

Indie Surprises in a New Era

One of the best things about the original Switch was the way it opened the door for indie developers. It felt like every few weeks, a delightful surprise would pop up on the eShop. These weren’t just filler titles, either; they were unique, inventive, and often perfectly suited to handheld play. I loved that.

With Switch 2, I hope that the trend continues and even evolves. From what I’ve heard, not all indie studios have development kits yet, but I suspect that’ll change quickly once the platform matures. What really excites me is how indie devs might use the new hardware creatively, especially if the rumoured camera attachment or mouse control support becomes standard.

Imagine an AR-style puzzle game that asks you to snap photos in the real world, or something experimental that ties into real-time movement. I’ve always believed indies are where the boldest innovations come from, and I’m ready for the next wave.

The Nintendo Magic: Sequels, Revivals, and the New

Of course, we can’t talk about a Nintendo console without getting giddy over Nintendo games. They keep their IPs close, which means if you want to play Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, or Splatoon, you need a Nintendo system. And that’s fine by me, because they almost always deliver something special.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom plays with enhanced visuals. I don’t mind paying a small upgrade fee for better performance on a game I already love. And this new Donkey Kong game on the horizon? The destructible environments sound fresh and exciting, injecting a breath of life into a franchise that deserves more love.

Still, what I’m most excited for is something brand-new. To me, Nintendo’s best moments come when they step out with a completely fresh idea. Like when Splatoon first launched, or when ARMS showed up with its wild concept. I want a curveball, something nobody predicted, that becomes an instant classic.

Sharing the Joy With My Kids

This next part gets a little more personal. I’m a parent now. While my kids are still quite young, one of them is just about reaching the age where I can begin to introduce light gaming. Already, my oldest enjoys watching me play, especially games with cute characters or silly animations.

One of my favourite things is seeing his face light up when something funny or whimsical happens in a game. Sometimes, that even affects how I feel about a title. If he’s giggling at a waddling penguin or wide-eyed at a dragon, that’s a good sign it’s a game with heart, and that matters to me.

What I’m really looking forward to with the Switch 2 is sharing games with my kids. Sitting side by side, exploring something together, and building that joy early. Maybe they’ll take to it, or maybe they won’t. And that’s okay. But I’m excited to find out.

Hope for Enhanced Ports

As the Switch 2 promises better hardware, I’m also hopeful for enhanced versions of games that didn’t run too smoothly on the original. Games like Trident’s Tale or World War Z had potential, but performance issues held them back. A more powerful system might give those titles a second chance, and players like me another reason to revisit them.

It’ll also be interesting to see how indies handle the transition. Will they offer free updates or small fees like Nintendo is doing? I suspect we’ll see a mix. But I hope more developers take the opportunity to optimise and reintroduce their games in the best light possible.

Breathing new life into classics

A Garden, a Break, and a Game

Here’s a small thing, but it means a lot to me: the ability to take my games on the go. That’s what I loved most about the original Switch, and it’s something I’m so glad Nintendo is keeping.

I don’t get much uninterrupted time to sit in front of a big screen. Between work, parenting, and my hobby of gardening, my time is chopped into little bits. So when I take a break from planting flowers or weeding a bed, being able to pause and play a game in the garden for a few minutes is something I treasure.

One of my fondest memories is sitting outside, playing Ocarina of Time on 3DS on a sunny day. I can already imagine myself doing something similar with the Switch 2, taking a break from potting plants, sitting on the patio, and diving into a new Zelda game. Silly? Maybe. But for me, that’s the dream.

Surprises Yet to Come

Finally, what excites me most about the Switch 2 is the unknown. Nintendo always has a surprise up its sleeve, sometimes strange (Labo), sometimes nostalgic (NSO retro libraries), sometimes just plain fun (StreetPass, anyone?). Maybe we’ll get something wild like StreetPass 2.0 or a new social system. Maybe the camera attachment will be more than just a gimmick.

Whatever it is, I’m here for it. Out of all the console makers, Nintendo has always spoken to my heart the most. Even when they miss the mark commercially (hello, Wii U), I find myself attached to what they’re trying to do.

So here we go again—with a new system, a fresh start, and hopefully, a whole new set of memories.
