Gate Pass: Precision Platforming Meets Puzzle Solving

Gate Pass is a 2D platformer that initially gave me pause. Judging by the trailer and screenshots, it seemed like another one of those rage-inducing precision platformers designed to fray nerves rather than entertain. However, while the high difficulty is indeed present, the game surprised me with its clever integration of puzzle elements. This isn’t a game to judge by its trailer alone; it’s much more than it appears.

An Odd and Quirky Premise

The premise of Gate Pass is as peculiar as it is amusing. You play as a character named Knot, who is tricked by a mischievous slime monster that disguises itself as a door to the bathroom. In his rush, Knot is transported to a bizarre labyrinth of puzzles and challenges. His goal? To navigate the maze, find his way home, and hopefully take care of the pressing need that started all of this. This setup, delivered in a short, quirky cutscene, sets the tone for a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

A Puzzle-Platformer at Heart

With 100 levels to conquer, Gate Pass tasks players with a straightforward objective: find the exit door. The controls are simple: move, jump, double jump, and interact with objects like boxes, but the gameplay is far from simplistic. As you progress, new mechanics are introduced, such as teleporting through doors, moving blocks, collecting keys, and dodging spikes. The game does a great job of easing players into these mechanics with brief tutorials before ramping up the difficulty.

What makes Gate Pass stand out is its emphasis on puzzle-solving. Observation is key, rushing through a level rarely works but fortunately reloading the level is instant. Often, you’ll need to survey the layout carefully to devise a plan, whether it’s determining which keys to collect, figuring out alternative paths, or timing jumps to avoid hazards. Some levels reward thinking outside the box, which I found to be the most enjoyable aspect of the game.

That said, precision platforming is still a significant part of the experience. Success often hinges on perfectly timed leaps and double jumps. Some levels also include time-sensitive elements, requiring quick reflexes in addition to strategic thinking. Thankfully, Gate Pass isn’t entirely unforgiving. As you progress, new level doors unlock in the main hub area, allowing you to skip particularly tough stages and return to them later. Completing just half of the levels is enough to see the game’s basic ending, though completionists looking for the full 100% challenge will have their work cut out for them.

Visuals and Sound

The visuals in Gate Pass are functional but unremarkable. The sprite work and level designs are basic, and while they don’t exude unique flair, they get the job done. The soundtrack is decent, complementing the gameplay without leaving a lasting impression. It’s a simple aesthetic package that prioritizes clarity over style, which works for a game so focused on gameplay.

A Few Bumps in the Road

The biggest issue I encountered was the double-jump mechanic. It requires precise timing to activate, which often feels inconsistent. Whether using a controller, keyboard (the recommended method), or even playing on Steam Deck, the double jump remained finicky. This was particularly frustrating in levels that demanded pinpoint accuracy and finesse.

Conclusion: A Rewarding Challenge

Gate Pass is challenging, but not in the overwhelming way I feared. Its emphasis on puzzles and observation adds depth, creating a rewarding experience when you successfully overcome its trials. While the game does have frustrating moments, and I wish the double jump were more responsive, it’s clear that the developer succeeded in crafting a thoughtful, engaging platformer.

If you’re looking for a platforming game with a blend of challenging puzzles and precision mechanics, Gate Pass is worth picking up, especially given its affordable price point.
